DEARBORN, Mo./FOUNTAIN HILLS, Arizona (Reuters) - Managers of a Missouri gas station and an Arizona food store said on Thursday they were delighted that they may have handed tickets to the two prospective multi-millionaire winners of a record $587.5 million Powerball lottery jackpot.

The two winning tickets were sold at the gas station and sandwich shop in the tiny farming town of Dearborn, Missouri, about 30 miles north of Kansas City, and the food store in Fountain Hills, Arizona, on the outskirts of Phoenix.

Although the identities of the ticket-holders were not immediately announced, they picked the winning numbers announced at the drawing Wednesday night: 5, 16, 22, 23, 29, and the Powerball number 6.

They will share an estimated $385 million before taxes if they opt to take the prize as a lump sum, or the $587.5 million can be paid out to them as annuities over three decades, the Multi-State Lottery Association said.

Kristi Williams, a clerk at the Trex Mart convenience store in Dearborn, said she and another employee high-fived each other when they learned the morning after the drawing that one of the two winning tickets had been purchased there.

Store manager Chris Nauerz, who was working Wednesday when the lucky ticket was purchased, called the news "shocking." He said the station gets a mix of customers, both locals from Dearborn, population 500, and truck drivers passing through on nearby Interstate 29.

"It's pretty crazy to think somebody locally could possibly be a millionaire and not know it yet," Nauerz said. "And the fact that I may have even handed over the ticket is even wilder."

The popular lottery - which is played in 42 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands - had not had a winner for two months.

After no one won the top prize in Saturday's drawing, the pot grew by about $263 million to $587.5 million amid a national frenzy to buy tickets.

Bob Chebat, the manager of the store in Arizona where the second lucky ticket was purchased, said customers bought 986 tickets yesterday and that there was a good chance he had sold the winning ticket.

"It's almost as good as me winning," Chebat said.

"People say all the time that I'll throw you a million if I win, and no one ever has ... I guess we'll see what happens now."

Mary Neubauer, a spokeswoman for the Iowa Lottery, where Powerball is based, said people from around the world called hoping for a chance to play but were told they had to be in a participating location to buy a ticket.

The previous Powerball top prize of $365 million was won in 2006 by ConAgra slaughterhouse workers in Nebraska. The largest-ever U.S. lottery jackpot, the $656 million Mega Millions drawing, was shared by three winning tickets last March.

Once month after the official release of its new operating system, Microsoft has announced that it has sold 40 million licenses for Windows 8. Those numbers are very close to the number of Windows 7 licenses sold one month after release.

TechSpot's Jose Vilches reported, "Microsoft has sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses after the operating system's first month of retail availability. Tami Reller, corporate vice president for Windows and Windows Live, revealed the number at a recent investor conference held by Credit Suisse but stopped short of mentioning how many of those came from new PC sales and how many came from end users actually buying upgrades."

InformationWeek's Paul McDougall wrote, "Windows 8 is selling at about the same rate Windows 7 did when that operating system, the best-selling in Microsoft's history, rolled out in late 2010, a Microsoft official said Tuesday. Tami Reller, CFO of Microsoft's Windows division, said the company has sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses since it launched the OS on Oct. 26. "The 40 million is roughly in line with Windows 7," said Reller, speaking at the Credit Suisse Technology Conference, in Scottsdale, Ariz. Microsoft has previously said that it sold 60 million Windows 7 licenses during that operating system's first three months on the market."

Time's Harry McCrackentook a more critical look at the numbers, noting,

Microsoft is saying that Windows 8?s first month has been around twice as strong as Windows Vista?s, and four times as strong as Windows XP?s.

Except it?s not that simple. There are more PC users than there were in 2001, when Windows XP shipped, so you?d expect sales in 2012 to be higher. And Microsoft knocked down Windows 8?s upgrade price to $39.99, far less than it?s traditionally charged for new versions of Windows, which should goose sales. And every version of Windows enters a marketplace in a different state of economic health, which presumably impacts the sales of operating-system software.

Basically, so many factors are at play that unless the number of licenses sold is astonishingly low or high, it?s impossible for those of us outside of Microsoft to know whether the figure tells us anything beyond the fact that millions and millions of people and businesses use Windows and buy Windows computers. Which we already knew.

According to ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, "Reller shared a few other stats during her remarks including:

• Microsoft now has certified 1,500 PCs and tablets for Windows 8, up from the 1,000 devices it had certified a month ago at launch.
• The number of apps available in the Microsoft Store has doubled since the launch. (She didn't talk about the total number of Windows Store/Metro Style apps available currently, but WinAppUpdate pinned that number at just over 21,500 worldwide this week.)
• A number of applications available in the Windows Store have crossed the $25,000 revenue mark. (Again, no specifics were shared here.)"

Iran's oil ministry has asked the Chinese National Petroleum Co. (CNPC) to develop phase 11 of the giant South Pars gas field in a 35-month period with a warning that, otherwise, domestic or foreign contractors would replace it.

CULIACAN, Mexico (AP) ? A 20-year-old state beauty queen was killed during a running gun battle between soldiers and the gang of drug traffickers she was traveling with in northern Mexico, the chief prosecutor of the state of Sinaloa said Monday.

In a scene reminiscent of the 2011 movie "Miss Bala" ? or "Miss Bullet" ? the body of Maria Susana Flores Gamez was found lying near an assault rifle on a rural road in a mountainous area of the drug-plagued state. It was unclear if she had used the weapon.

"She was with the gang of criminals, but we cannot say whether she participated in the shootout," state prosecutor Marco Antonio Higuera said. "That's what we're going to have to investigate."

The doe-eyed, slender brunette was voted the 2012 Woman of Sinaloa in a beauty pageant in February. She had earlier competed for the other, more prestigious state beauty contest, Our Beauty Sinaloa, but didn't win.

Higuera said Flores Gamez was traveling in one of the vehicles that engaged soldiers in an hours-long chase and running gun battle on Saturday. Higuera said two other members of the drug gang were killed and four were detained.

The shootout began when the gunmen opened fire on a Mexican army patrol. Soldiers gave chase and cornered the gang at a safe house near the town of Mocorito. They escaped, and the gunbattle continued along a nearby roadway, where the gang's vehicles were eventually stopped. Six vehicles, drugs and weapons were seized following the confrontation.

It was at least the third instance in which a beauty queen or pageant contestants have been linked to Mexico's violent drug gangs.

In 2008, former Miss Sinaloa Laura Zuniga was stripped of her crown in the Hispanoamerican Queen pageant, after she was detained on suspicion of drug and weapons violations. She was later released without charges.

Zuniga was detained in western Mexico in late 2010 along with seven men, some of them suspected drug traffickers. Authorities found a large stash of weapons, ammunition and $53,300 with them inside a vehicle.

In 2011, a Colombian former model and pageant contestant was detained along with Jose Jorge Balderas, an accused drug trafficker and suspect in the 2010 bar shooting of Salvador Cabanas, a former star for Paraguay's national football team and Mexico's Club America. She was also later released.

Higuera said Flores Gamez has been turned over to relatives for burial.

"This is a sad situation," Higuera told a local radio station. She had been enrolled in media courses at a local university, and had been modeling and pageants since at least 2009.

Javier Valdez, the author of a 2009 book about narco ties to beauty pageants entitled "Miss Narco," said "this is a recurrent story."

"There is a relationship, sometimes pleasant and sometimes tragic, between organized crime and the beauty queens, the pageants, the beauty industry itself," Valdez said.

"It is a question of privilege, power, money, but also a question of need," said Valdez. "For a lot of these young women, it is easy to get involved with organized crime, in a country that doesn't offer many opportunities for young people."

Sometimes drug traffickers seek out beauty queens, but sometimes the models themselves look for narco boyfriends, Valdez said.

"I once wrote about a girl I knew of who was desperate to get a narco boyfriend," he said. "She practically took out a classified ad saying 'Looking for a Narco'."

The stories seldom end well. In the best of cases, a beautiful woman with a tear-stained face is marched before the press in handcuffs. In the worst of cases, they simply disappear.

"They are disposable objects, the lowest link in the chain of criminal organizations, the young men recruited as gunmen and the pretty young women who are tossed away in two or three years, or are turned into police or killed."

30 Years of Breast Screening: 1.3 Million Wrongly Treated | Pakalert ...

The breast cancer industry?s holy grail (that mammography is the primary weapon in the war against breast cancer) has been disproved. In fact, mammography appears to have CREATED 1.3 million cases of breast cancer in the U.S. population that were not there.

A disturbing new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine is bringing mainstream attention to the possibility that mammography has caused far more harm than good in the millions of women who have employed it over the past 30 years as their primary strategy in the fight against breast cancer.[i]

Titled ?Effect of Three Decades of Screening Mammography on Breast-Cancer Incidence,? researchers estimated that among women younger than 40 years of age, breast cancer was overdiagnosed, i.e. ?tumors were detected on screening that would never have led to clinical symptoms,? in 1.3 million U.S. women over the past 30 years. In 2008, alone, ?breast cancer was overdiagnosed in more than 70,000 women; this accounted for 31% of all breast cancers diagnosed.?

As we revealed in a previous article,[ii] the primary form of mammography-detected breast cancer is ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), also known as ?stage zero? or ?non-invasive breast cancer.? Unlike truly invasive cancer, which expands outward like the crab after which it was named (Greek:? Cancer = Crab), ductal carcinoma is in situ, i.e. situated, non-moving ? an obvious contradiction in terms.

Also, DCIS presents without symptoms in the majority of women within which it is detected, and if left untreated will (usually) not progress to cause harm to women. Indeed, without x-ray diagnostic technologies, many if not most of the women diagnosed with it would never have known they had it in the first place. The journal Lancet Oncology, in fact, published a cohort study last year finding that even clinically verified ?invasive? cancers appear to regress with time if left untreated:

[We] believe many invasive breast cancers detected by repeated mammography screening do not persist to be detected by screening at the end of 6 years, suggesting that the natural course of many of the screen-detected invasive breast cancers is to spontaneously regress.[iii]

The new study authors point out ?The introduction of screening mammography in the United States has been associated with a doubling in the number of cases of early-stage breast cancer that are detected each year.? And yet, they noted, only 6.5% of these early-stage breast cancer cases were expected to progress to advanced disease. DCIS and related ?abnormal breast findings,? in other words, may represent natural, benign variations in breast morphology. Preemptive treatment strategies, however, are still employed today as the standard of care, with mastectomy rates actually increasing since 2004.[iv]

The adverse health effects associated with overdiagnosis and overtreatment with lumpectomy, radiation, chemotherapy and hormone-suppressive treatments cannot be underestimated, especially when one considers the profound psychological trauma that follows each stage of diagnosis and treatment, and the additional physiological burdens such psychic injuries lead to, including up-regulation of multidrug resistance genes within cancer as a result of the increased adrenaline associated with the ?flight-or-fight? stress response.[v]

Also, it is now coming to light that chemotherapy and radiation actually increase the proportion of the highly malignant cancer stem cells to the relatively non-malignant daughter cells within the tumor colony. Much in the same way that conventional antibiotic agents will drive multidrug resistance within the subpopulation of surviving post-antibiotic bacteria, ensuring recurrence, conventional treatments also drive the surviving stem-cell enriched tumor populations into greater resistance and metastatic potential when it does inevitably recur. Or worse, radiation therapy may actually increase the ?stemness? of breast cancer cells making them 30 times more malignant (capable of forming new tumors).

If it is indeed true that DCIS, other abnormal breast findings, as well as clinically confirmed invasive breast cancer, either remain benign or regress when left untreated, the entire breast cancer industry, which is already deeply mired in cause-marketing conflicts of interest, must radically reform itself, or face massive financial and ethical liabilities vis-?-vis outdated and no longer ?evidence-based? practices.

Another serious problem with mammography (and there are dozens of them) not addressed in this latest research finding concerns the unique carcinogenicity of the x-rays the technology employs. We now know that the 30 kVp radiation, colloquially known as ?low energy? x-rays, are between 300-400% more carcinogenic than the ?higher energy? radiation given off by atomic bomb blasts (200 kVp or higher).[vi]? Present day radiation risk models used to assess the known breast cancer risk associated with mammography against the purported benefits do not take into this profound discrepancy. In fact, these models were developed before DNA was even discovered.

Also, considering that breast cancer susceptibility genes, BRCA1/BRCA2, interfere with the DNA self-repair mechanisms needed to reduce the carcinogenicity associated with radiation exposure within those who carry these genetic variations, the harms associated with mammography may be exponentially higher than the conventional medical community presently understands and communicates to their patients.? Indeed, it is likely that x-ray based mammography screenings have been planting the seeds of future radiation-induced breast cancer within exposed populations.

With top-tier biomedical journals now publishing research diametrically opposed to the policies and recommendations of both governmental, non-governmental and industry-sponsored health organizations, the time is ripe for us to critically evaluate conventional medicine?s conventional standard of care and to educate ourselves further to the true causes of cancer, and how to go about preventing and/or removing them.

Black Friday sales slip as shoppers opt for Thursday ?doorbusters?

Black Friday, the official kickoff to the holiday shopping season, saw more foot traffic than ever before, according to estimates. But it appears so-called "doorbuster" deals offered the day before dinged sales.

According to ShopperTrak, which tracks retail foot traffic, there were more than 307 million store visits on Friday, up 3.5 percent. But Black Friday shoppers spent an estimated $11.2 billion, down 1.8 percent over 2011, when consumers spent $11.4 billion.

And for once, the sluggish economy is not to blame.

"It is all Black Thursday's fault," ZeroHedge.com said.

Shopping malls were "less hectic" on Black Friday this year, Bloomberg.com reported, as retailers "have turned Black Friday, once a one-day event after Thanksgiving, into a week's worth of deals and discounts."

And Thursday's deals "attracted some of the spending that's usually meant for Friday," ShopperTrak said.

Big box stores like Wal-Mart and Target were open on Thanksgiving night, drawing crowds that were--in some cases--rowdy. (Thankfully, it was nothing like the dystopian version of shopping hell recently envisioned by "Saturday Night Live.")

Another reason for the Black Friday dip: people skipped lines and shopped online. According to comScore, Black Friday online sales topped $1 billion for the first time, jumping 26 percent to $1.04 billion, compared to $816 million last year.

And according to IBM Benchmark, online sales rose 17 percent on Thanksgiving and 21 percent on Black Friday.

Stocks close higher on strong tech

Stocks closed broadly higher in a holiday-shortened Friday session, with the major averages all gaining more than 1 percent. Techs led, with big-caps propelling the sector to its first positive week in the last 10.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 1 percent higher, led by tech firms Hewlett-Packard , Microsoft and Cisco.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq ?also closed up, with the Nasdaq gaining 1.5 percent. The S&P 500 had its best five-day winning streak since mid-March.

The CBOE Volatility Index, widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, fell to near 15.

Among key S&P sectors, techs and telecoms were the leading gainers, while utilities lagged.

Retailers were the main focus on "Black Friday" ? often the busiest shopping day of the year.

Matthew Shay, National Retail Federation CEO, told CNBC that the holiday shopping season appears to be off to a great start with consumers flocking to the stores. ?We?re predicting 4.1 percent sales growth this year which would be $585 billion,? he said.

Discount retailers Wal-Mart and Target were among the stores that opened their doors on Thanksgiving evening.?

In a press release, Wal-Mart U.S. said it had its "best ever" Black Friday events, selling 1.8 million towels, 1.3 million televisions, 1.3 million dolls and 250,000 bicycles.

Terry Lundgren, Macy's chairman & CEO, told CNBC that the flagship Macy's store in New York City had a record crowd for its midnight opening. "It was a record crowd last year but that crowd was exceeded at this (Herald Square) store certainly this morning," he said.

Apple also kicked of a Black Friday sale, cutting prices on iPads, iPods and MacBooks.

Gap , Nordstrom , Bed Bath & Beyond and Dollar General were all higher.

?Earlier in the week was so surprising,? Matthew Cheslock of Virtu Financial told CNBC. ?You had one of the biggest accounting scandals possibly, we had an insider trading scandal and the markets still went higher. Now we?re focused on retail, which is kind of a nice story. Maybe this gives us a nice little lift."

European stocks had their best week so far this year, boosted on Friday by strong German business confidence data and growing expectations Greece will receive more aid.

Greece said the International Monetary Fund had relaxed its debt-cutting target for the country, suggesting lenders were closer to a deal for a vital aid tranche to be paid. But other sources involved in the talks cautioned the funding gap was far bigger than Greece has suggested, according to Reuters. (Read More: Greece?s Lenders Move Closer to Deal on Funding.)

Turning to stock news, Blackberry maker Research In Motion was the subject of bullish analyst comments about the soon-to-be-released BlackBerry 10.

SAP , the German business software giant, is considering listing its stock in Shanghai.

After the close on Wednesday, General Motors announced that its financing arm will pay about $4.2 billion for the European and Latin American auto lending operations of Ally Financial.

In deal news, the Wall Street Journal reported that Baxter International is in talks to buy Swedish medical-equipment maker Gambro for about $4 billion in a bid to boost its kidney dialysis business.

I admire those couples that seem to find time for each other every single day or even several times a week. We?ll get there some day. We strive for it. Some weeks are better then others, and then there are weeks like this one, where we get to Friday in a whirlwind and wonder where the week went.

On days like those, I am thankful for easy date night meals. This is one of those. It comes together in 20 minutes. The rest of the night, we can fall into each others arms and just be together. No expectations. No schedule. No big kitchen clean up. Just simply the lightness of being ? being together.

Serve with a large green salad to start!

Scallops with golden almonds

?6 large scallops or enough for 2 people

1 tablespoon butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

smoked paprika

salt and pepper

1/4 cup slivered almonds

1 tablespoon lemon juice, fresh

In a frying pan melt butter with olive oil. Pat the scallops dry using a paper towel. Season with salt and pepper and sprinkle with paprika. I use a sweet paprika, but use what you like best. A good-quality?Spanish or Hungarian paprika?is a world apart from the stuff in the bulk bins!

Once the butter mixture is very hot, add the scallops. Cook for 2 minutes per side (if scallops are 1 inch across, less if they are smaller, more if they are larger) until browned on both sides but not quite cooked through.

Place the scallops on a bed of creamed cauliflower (see below). Add the almonds to the pan and cook until the almonds are brown. Add the lemon juice and stir until combined. Top the scallops with the almond butter sauce.

Creamy cauliflower

?6 cups cauliflower florets or 1 large head of cauliflower

1 tablespoon butter or olive oil

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg

Salt and pepper, to taste

Steam the cauliflower for 10 minutes or until cooked through. Strain and return to the pot. Add butter, salt and nutmeg. Using an?emulsion blender, pur?e until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. A food processor or blender will also work.

Place 1-1/2 cups of cauliflower puree into a wide low rimmed bowl or plate. Top with scallops and browned almonds.

Barr responded ?I believe that a child's upbringing is so important and when they don't get [what] they need ? for me, my relationship with my mother got broken at a critical stage in my development. I needed that mother figure in my life and all of the sudden that relationship was broken. So what I was trying to get from other women was that thing that I needed, that piece of female ? I don't even know how to describe it.?

?The problem with that is two hurting women can never get what they need from each other, the same as two hurting men can never get what they need from each other; it's just a distortion of love,? she added.

S'pore opposition leader freed from bankruptcy

SINGAPORE (AP) ? Prominent Singapore opposition leader Chee Soon Juan has been discharged from bankruptcy, the government said Wednesday, after an unprecedented concession by two former prime ministers to whom he owed about $408,000.Ex-prime ministers Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong agreed to accept a reduced amount of 30,000 Singapore dollars ($24,500) from Chee, which will free him from bankruptcy proceedings formally on Friday, said a statement by the Insolvency and Public Trustee's Office.

Chee, the firebrand leader of the Singapore Democratic Party, was declared a bankrupt in 2006 after he failed to pay S$500,000 in court-ordered damages to Lee and Goh. The two had sued him for defamation for comments he made against them during the 2001 general elections.

The development means Chee, 50, will be able to travel outside the country freely and also contest the next elections, which are due in 2016. Still, some commentators saw the concession by Lee and Goh as a political manoeuvre -- allowing Chee to contest the elections could split the fragmented opposition's votes further at a time the ruling People Action Party itself has lost much popular support because of rising prices and an influx of foreigners.

"It could be that Lee Kuan Yew has mellowed, but it's hard to believe that he has changed because it doesn't fit his character," said respected political commentator and former newspaper editor P.N. Balji.

"The other possibility, to discharge Chee from bankrupt, could be to 'muddy the waters' especially for the coming general elections. Chee's party and the (other opposition) Workers' Party do not see eye to eye and there might be a split in votes for the opposition," Balji told the Associated Press.

Lee, modern Singapore's founding father, and Goh have frequently and successfully sued opposition leaders and other critics for defamation. A report published by the Human Rights Watch in January criticised the country for resorting to charges of contempt of court, criminal and civil defamation as well as sedition to rein in its critics. Among those sued are publications such as The Economist, the International Herald Tribune and Far Eastern Economic Review.

Lee was Singapore's prime minister from 1959 to 1990, when he handed over power to Goh. Lee continued to work for the government, first as "senior minister," a non-executive advisory post specially created for him, and from 2004 until 2011 as "minister mentor." Goh was prime minister from 1990 to 2004, when the prime ministership went to Lee's son, Lee Hsien Loong.

Chee, a trained neuropsychologist, raised the S$30,000 primarily through donations and proceeds from the sale of his books on politics. He was informed in September that both Lee and Goh were willing to accept the reduced amount.

"As the creditors have not objected to Dr. Chee's debt settlement proposal, it is deemed that they have accepted the proposal, as provided for under the Bankruptcy Act," the statement from the Insolvency and Public Trustee's Office said.

As a bankrupt, Chee was required to seek government's permission to travel. Earlier this year his request to attend the Oslo Freedom Forum ? a conference on human rights where Chee was scheduled to be a guest speaker ? was denied.

"The important thing (is that) being discharged from bankruptcy means it will allow me to plan and lead the party into the next general election," Chee told the AP.

"The big strategy that we're banking on right now is to come up with shadow policies on healthcare and housing as alternatives to that of the government. The PAP is floundering in these policies and in taking the country forward."

Travel insurance helps in mitigating travel risks | Times of Zambia

IT IS?now widely accepted that the world is a global village. One can travel thousands of miles in a day to reach distant places which were almost impossible not long ago in the history of mankind.

This has been necessitated by the rapid advance in technology especially with air transport which has seemingly made distances quicker to reach.

Despite this improved technological advancement, travelling to a new or unfamiliar place can be a nightmare especially if you are going there for the first time.

A friend of mine I met in Israel told me how he lost his treasured Ipad at Amsterdam International airport in Holland en-route to Tel Aviv, Israel.

Neither the airline nor the airport authorities could compensate him despite the Ipad missing from their area of control.

Another friend told me a story where his luggage could not be traced in Uganda until after four days. Apparently that was even the time to come back home.

Imagine the inconvenience to my friend in this situation where he had to start buying clothes and other necessities which were not budgeted for. What if the luggage was not found, it would have been a big loss to him.

The common feature between my two friends above was that they had not arranged for insurance prior to the trips.

On a rather good note another person while in Europe lost his suitcase containing personal belongings worth thousands of dollars.

For him he had bought insurance to cover his personal belongings and as soon as he came back from his trip he lodged in a claim from an insurance company and he was paid for all his lost luggage.

Back home in Zambia, not long ago an Emirates plane headed for Dubai had to make a U-turn after developing a fault with a lot of passengers on board.

You can imagine the inconvenience of not only having to incur unplanned expenses but loss of time resulting in loss of business for some while others probably had to cancel their trips because of trauma.

Insurance policies like Overseas Travel Insurance (OTI) are there to mitigate some of the risks above.

In fact in the recent past, OTI has become increasingly popular and some embassies will not issue a visa without insurance.

Therefore the need for OTI arises from two angles. The first one is the mandatory one where it is a prerequisite to issue a visa and the second one arises from a personal need to protect oneself while in a foreign country.

What does OTI really cover?

This policy covers among other things emergency health treatment, hospital bills, evacuation, personal injury, loss or damage of passport/baggage, flight cancellation costs, curtailment, personal effects or travel documents, etc.

Benefits will differ from one insurer to the other and some countries attract higher premium because of certain factors like medical fees, standard of living, political stability, etc.

Like many other Insurance policies the benefits listed above can vary not only from the chosen plan but from Insurer to Insurer. Some Insurers have plans which have different combination of benefits.

It is therefore important to understand what is covered as you buy a product.

One other aspect which is important is to know what to do in case the insured risk occurs. For example, if you fall sick in a foreign country who should you contact?

I heard of someone who fell sick in some country and when he tried to contact the health service provider he could not go through because the phone number given by the Insurer was not in use.

Now if such a basic need cannot be fulfilled then it is meaningless to buy such a policy. Insurance must fulfill its obligation at the point of need.

The expected benefit need to be honoured. However this one incidence is not meant to undermine the benefits of Insurance neither to overlook people who have benefited from the policy under similar circumstances, the point is that people who buy these products must benefit from them accordingly.

They should not have headaches when it comes to claiming but rather have some comfort and relief. They need to enjoy that peace of mind which comes along with buying insurance.

The policy can be arranged on a one off basis covering the insured for the period requested. The other one may be an annual policy for frequent travelers.

What does one need to have to buy OTI?

The basic requirements are copy one?s National Registration Certificate (NRC) copy, Passport copy, destination and period of stay. With the information from these documents a quotation can be given.

Actually just over the phone the Insurer is able to give a quote if one gives their age, destination and period of the visit.

Travel Insurance can be bought from a number of Life Assurance Companies in Zambia.
