"Monsters University" roared to the top of the box office again.

Family-friendly "Monsters University" topped U.S. and Canadian movie charts for a second straight weekend, fending off competition from two new releases, the female buddy comedy "The Heat" and the explosion-filled thriller "White House Down."

"Monsters University" from Walt Disney Co's Pixar animation studio sold $46.2 million worth of tickets at domestic theaters from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates. The movie is a prequel to the 2001 hit "Monsters Inc."

"The Heat," headlined by Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, landed in second place, grabbing $40 million. Bullock plays an uptight FBI agent paired with a loud and aggressive cop (McCarthy) to bring down a drug lord.

"World War Z," the zombie thriller starring Brad Pitt as a former U.N. crisis specialist fighting the undead, slipped one notch to finish third in its second week of release, earning $29.8 million during the weekend domestically.

The action movie "White House Down," the story of a terrorist attack in the U.S. capital, finished in the No. 4 slot with $25.7 million. The movie from "Independence Day" director Roland Emmerich stars Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Sony Corp's movie studio released "White House Down." Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc, distributed "World War Z." "The Heat" was distributed by the 20th Century Fox studio, a unit of 21st Century Fox, part of the company formerly known as News Corp.

In Sanford, Fla., Zimmerman trial keeps a shaken community on edge

The Trayvon Martin shooting rocked Sanford, Fla., to its core. And with the murder trial of George Zimmerman now underway, the city is unnerved by the attention and fearful about the outcome.

By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff Writer / June 28, 2013

Trayvon Martin's parents, Sybrina Fulton, left, and Tracy Martin, center, attend George Zimmerman's trial in Seminole circuit court in Sanford, Fla. on Thursday.

Jacob Langston/Orlando Sentinel/AP

Outwardly, Sanford, Fla., is ?just an old Southern middle-class town,? where races may be segregated socially and culturally, but where most folks feel part of the same community, says resident Susan Mooty.

' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

That recent sense of community, shared by blacks as well as whites, was nevertheless hard-won, following, as it did, a racist history that famously included running Jackie Robinson out of town lest he play a spring training game with white players.

But the bullet that took the life of a black youth named Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26, 2012, shattered that recent comity. In its stead, a palpable racial tension arose that lingers on these brick-laid streets more than a year after civil rights groups and the New Black Panthers crowded the riverwalk to protest the Sanford Police Department?s original decision not to arrest Trayvon?s killer, a local neighborhood watch captain named George Zimmerman.

After nationwide protests, Mr. Zimmerman ultimately was charged with second-degree murder, and today his face is on every TV screen in town as TV stations run live feeds from his trial.

?Look at this street: Usually everybody is out and about, walking around,? says Jimmy Franklin, an African-American former Marine, who lives in Sanford?s predominantly black Goldsboro neighborhood. ?But everybody is inside, watching the trial on TV.?

Scrutiny of the case, meanwhile, is serving to air Americans? attitudes toward racial stereotyping and discrimination ? the trial has already featured testimony that Trayvon told a friend on the phone that a ?creepy-ass cracker? was following him ? as well as notions about self-defense and gun-carry regulations.

The real legacy of the Zimmerman trial, however, some historians go so far as to suggest, is its capacity to deliver a verdict that could either relieve some of America?s pent up tension around race or serve as the fuse of a racial powder keg, the last straw in decades of poverty, frustration and a sense of injustice in America?s poorer black communities, including the small peeling bungalows of Goldsboro, where faded ?Justice for Trayvon? posters still hang in windows.

?The George Zimmerman trial is powerful because it?s defining the moment we?re in,? particularly with respect to racism and bigotry in the age of Obama, says George Ciccariello-Maher, a professor of history and politics at Drexel University, in Philadelphia. ?We see the same old dynamics emerging in a different guise, which is we have questions of hoodies, clothing, all these aesthetic issues that are ultimately about race. In that, the George Zimmerman trial can both explain what?s changed in [Sanford and around the country] but can also run the risk of obscuring ? what?s really going on.?

More immediately, it?s hard not to say that the trial is challenging Sanford?s painful and circuitous road away from its Jim Crow history. The Trayvon Martin case and ensuing Zimmerman trial have deeply upset this city of 53,000 people. ?This is a nightmare of community in terms of trying to come to terms with what?s happening,? says Gary Mormino, author of ?Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams: A social history of modern Florida.?

To be sure, there?s a sense here that this case could be playing out in any town, anywhere in America, not just in Sanford. ?Everyone is trying to blow [the race question] up bigger than it is,? says Ms. Mooty, who is white.

In that way, painting the entire community of Sanford with a racist broad brush, as many feel that civil rights activists and the media have done, may be unfair.

?One way people are looking at this trial is as a reminder of deep-seated cultural fears that go back hundreds of years, where we can have laws and Supreme Court decisions, but it?s hard to change people?s hearts, especially people who have been separated culturally and legally for so long,? says Rebecca Watts, a professor at Stetson University in DeLand, Fla., and author of ?Contemporary Southern Identity: Community through Controversy.? ?And even though legal separation technically isn?t there, people still live largely separated lives racially in a lot of the country, and the South is included in that.?

The NEA announced Thursday that its 2014 Jazz Masters ? the nation's highest jazz honor ? also include avant-garde saxophonist-composer Anthony Braxton, bassist-educator Richard Davis, and educator Jamey Aebersold.

Jarrett was cited by the NEA for his work in both the jazz and classical fields. What Art Did For Hank (short fiction) | The Jittery Goat

images[10]Daily Prompt: The Artist?s Eye

Is there a painting or sculpture you?re drawn to? What does it say to you? Describe the experience. (Or, if art doesn?t speak to you, tell us why.)

Penelope and Hank came from two different worlds. Penelope from a world of beauty, grace, and affluence. Hank from grease, mud, and manure. Their worlds were never going to meet, but they created their own little planet in a special corner of the cosmos.

?I don?t like art,? Hank said all the way to the gallery. ?It?s full of weirdos and people who aren?t who they are and if that is who they are, I want no part of ?em.?

?I spent two weeks birthing calves, stacking hay, and shoveling smelly stuff all for you,? Penelope said.

?And that?s the only reason I?m here with you today,? Hank said. ?Two weeks on the farm is only worth an hour here.?

Penelope looked over her glasses at Hank and squinted one eye.

?Hmm, the evil eye; two hours,? Hank said. ?I said two, right??

They meandered along the hung paintings. Penelope stopped to study and give thought. Hank tugged at his collar.

?I?m sorry, Penelope,? Hank said. ?Now just look at that, it?s a tennis shoe. It ain?t art.?

?Yes,? Penelope said. ?Anyone can see it?s a tennis shoe, but what else do you see.?

?It?s old and worn-out,? Hank said.

?Is that it?? Penelope said.

?It?s got ta smell,? Hank said. ?You can almost smell it.?

?Yes me too,? Penelope said.

?Looks to me like the guy must have been a guard,? Hank said.

?How so?? Penelope said.

?I can tell by the way the toe is worn,? Hank said. ?I played ball with this guy who wore his toes the same way. You could line up all his old shoes and they looked as if they were made that way purposely.?

?Didn?t you have shoes like that when we met?? Penelope said.

?Those were the most comfortable shoes I ever had,? Hank said. ?That shoe looks comfortable.? Hank pointed. ?Look there, Penelope, look at how the laces are broken and tied back together. That?s detail. He even has one strand not making it through the loop.?

Penelope smiled.

?A pair of shoes like that is?? Hank hesitated. ?A work of art.?

?How does it make you feel?? Penelope said.

?Relaxed and calm,? Hank said. ?You get that way with an old pair of shoes. They?re like old friends.?

?There is the artist would you like to talk to him?? Penelope said pointing to a short, bearded thin man in his late twenties walking along his paintings and taking compliments from other visitors.

?Hey, buddy,? Hank said. ?I sure like that tennis shoe.?

?Thank you,? the artist said.

Hank caught sight of the artist?s shoes. ?That?s your shoe!? Hank said. ?You?re a point guard.?

?Good observation,? the artist said. ?You could tell from the shoe??

?The way it showed it?s wear on the toe,? Hank said.

?I never knew that,? the artist said.

?That?s okay,? Hank said. ?You got to have an eye for that sort of thing.?

An hour later Penelope and Hank left the gallery. Tucked under his arm?a wrapped?painting purchased for $900. It was called ?Tennis shoe,? but Hank hung it in his bathroom and called it ?Relax.?

South Africa: Family visits critically ill Mandela

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Members of Nelson Mandela's family as well as South African Cabinet ministers have visited the hospital where the 94-year-old former president is critically ill.

One of Mandela's daughters, Makaziwe Mandela, was among family members who arrived at the Pretoria hospital on Friday. The ministers of health and defense also visited, the South African Press Association reported.

The anti-apartheid leader was taken to the hospital on June 8 to be treated for what the government said was a recurring lung infection. South Africans have held prayers nationwide, and many have left flowers and messages of support outside the hospital as well as his home in Johannesburg.

On Thursday, the office of South African President Jacob Zuma said Mandela's health had improved overnight, and that his condition was critical but stable.

Senate passes immigration bill, but future prospects are cloudy ...

The Senate passed a comprehensive immigration reform bill with bipartisan support on Thursday, the culmination of months of negotiations between Democratic and Republican senators. But their effort faces diminishing prospects in the Republican-led House, where Speaker John Boehner reiterated on Thursday that he would not vote on the Senate?s bill.

The bill passed on a 68-32 vote presided over by Vice President Joe Biden. Every Democratic senator voted ?aye? along with 14 Republicans, including the GOP members of the bipartisan ?Gang of Eight? who negotiated the bill: Marco Rubio of Florida, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and John McCain and Jeff Flake of Arizona.

?The finish line is very close to here,? Majority Leader Harry Reid said in a speech immediately preceding the vote. ?Down this very long hallway to the House of Representatives.?

In an effort to bring more Republicans on board and put pressure on the House to follow their lead, Democrats agreed to back an amendment by GOP senators Bob Corker and John Hoeven adding $38 billion to border security. While its passage brought some Republicans into the fold, it fell just short of reformers? stated goals of attracting 70 or more votes. And if the goal was to make the House feel compelled to act, they haven?t shown much willingness to do so.

While Reid said he was ?confident? that Congress would follow suit, recent developments have pro-reform lawmakers concerned that House Republican leaders are souring on a broad immigration bill along the Senate?s lines. On Thursday, Boehner set the bar high for a vote on any immigration legislation, saying that it would have to first garner support from a majority of Republicans.

?The House is not going to take up and vote on whatever the Senate passes,? Boehner told reporters. ?We?re going to do our own bill through regular order, and it will be legislation that reflects the will of our majority and the will of the American people.?

Few political observers believe there are enough GOP votes in the conservative House, whose members are mostly insulated from Latino voters in safe seats, to pass a bill with a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Recently, the House Judiciary Committee has started work on legislation aimed at criminalizing and deporting undocumented immigrants with help from local authorities, a policy modeled on Arizona?s SB 1070 law, which helped spark a backlash from Latino voters around the country. They could follow through with several smaller bills on high-tech visas and guest workers, but Senate Democrats and Latino groups are unlikely to support anything short of a comprehensive package that includes a citizenship component.

The Senate?s bill includes four main components. First, it would provide limited legal status to undocumented immigrants who register with the government, pay a fine, and pass a background check. It would also give many of them the option to apply for a green card after 10 years and citizenship after 13 if they stay out of legal trouble and learn English. Second, it would crack down on illegal hiring by requiring businesses to check whether their employees are authorized to work using the government?s E-Verify system. Third, it would overhaul the legal immigration system, allowing businesses to hire low-skilled workers for jobs they can demonstrate Americans won?t take and encouraging high-skilled foreign-born graduates to stay in the United States by making it easier to acquire a visa. Finally, the bill would massively expand the nation?s border security apparatus by doubling the border patrol to 40,000 agents, building hundreds of miles of fence, funding a slew of new technology to stop illegal crossings, and instituting a system to track undocumented immigrants who overstay their visas.

These components are all designed to work together as a unit. The legalization and worker visa components are an acknowledgement that existing undocumented immigrants have become a permanent part of the national fabric and that many businesses, especially agriculture, require migrant labor to function. In exchange, the border security and E-verify portions are intended to discourage future illegal entry.

(AP) ? Members of a South African choir have prayed and sung outside a hospital where Nelson Mandela, the country's former president, is reported to be in critical condition.

In addition to the choir from the Salvation Army, other people arrived Thursday to deliver flowers and messages of support for 94-year-old Mandela at the hospital in Pretoria, the South African capital.

Members of the youth league of the country's ruling party, the African National Congress, were planning prayer meetings Thursday to honor the anti-apartheid leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

President Jacob Zuma canceled a trip to Mozambique on Thursday in an indication of heightened concern about Mandela, whose health deteriorated last weekend.
