Republican and Democratic leaders rush to condemn naughty party members

Standing behind the same lectern, on the same stage, before the same reporters in a Capitol Hill briefing room only moments apart on Thursday morning, House Speaker John Boehner, a Republican, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, both needed to make something clear: Members of their own party have been bad, and no, they do not approve.

Pelosi addressed the Capitol Hill press corps first, where she fielded a question about the most recent saga of personal scandal from Anthony Weiner, a former Democratic House lawmaker now running to become New York City?s next mayor.

It was only three years ago that Pelosi stripped Weiner of his committee assignments in the House and urged him to leave Congress after he posted explicit pictures of himself on the Internet. (Weiner denied it at the time, claiming someone had ?hacked? his social media accounts. He was, curiously, unable to ?say with certitude? if the phallic images being splashed across the Internet were his own. Weiner?s story failed to hold up under scrutiny, and he stepped down in disgrace.) This week, after new pictures emerged on the website TheDirty.com, Weiner, who is married, admitted to misbehaving again, even after his public fall from grace.

Asked about the new pictures of Weiner, Pelosi looked physically perturbed that she still had to deal with him so long after his exit from the House, but she was unequivocal in her condemnation.

?Let me be very clear: The conduct of some of these people we?re talking about here is reprehensible,? Pelosi said. ?It is so disrespectful of women and what?s really startling about it is they don?t even realize ? they don?t have a clue ? if they?re clueless, get a clue. If they need therapy, do it in private.?

After answering a few more questions, Pelosi left the stage.

It was Boehner?s turn to be clear.

Although Republicans don?t have anyone in the their party advertising their bodies on the Web this week, one member did cause an uproar after making disparaging remarks about immigrant children.

During an interview with Newsmax last week, Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King, one of the fiercest opponents to the ongoing effort to pass an immigration overhaul, suggested that many immigrants who had been brought to the United States by their parents illegally as children would grow up to become drug smugglers.

"For everyone who's a valedictorian,? King said of children living in the United States illegally, ?there's another 100 out there who weigh 130 pounds ? and they've got calves the size of cantaloupes because they're hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.?

Not the best thing to say during a time when your party is making a deliberate and expensive campaign to bring more Hispanic Americans to vote Republican.

House leaders rushed to condemn King?s remarks, and Boehner reinforced his disapproval by bringing it up at his press conference.

?I want to be clear: There?s no place in this debate for hateful or ignorant comments from elected officials,? Boehner said. ?Earlier this week, Representative Steve King made comments that were, I think, deeply offensive and wrong. What he said does not reflect the values of the American people or the Republican Party. We all need to do our work in a constructive, open and respectful way. As I?ve said many times, we can disagree without being disagreeable.?

With that out of the way, perhaps leaders of both parties will get back to governing.

Perhaps.

Asiana Airlines crash: Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg was supposed to be on the flight

sheryl-sandberg-2013.jpgFacebook COO Sheryl Sandberg has revealed via Facebook (natch) that she was supposed to be a passenger on the Asiana Airlines flight that crash landed today in San Francisco.

Sandberg posted:

Taking a minute to be thankful and explain what happened. My family, colleagues Debbie Frost, Charlton Gholson and Kelly Hoffman and I were originally going to take the Asiana flight that just crash-landed. We switched to United so we could use miles for my family's tickets. Our flight was scheduled to come in at the same time, but we were early and landed about 20 minutes before the crash. Our friend Dave David Eun was on the Asiana flight and he is fine.

Thank you to everyone who is reaching out - and sorry if we worried anyone.

Serious moment to give thanks.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for iPad ? review

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

The iPad version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is satisfyingly slick.

A long time ago, in a galaxy, well, very, very close, Bioware released an RPG that shaped much of what was to follow in the genre. Ten years later and Aspyr has brought Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (?6.99, App Store) to the iPad ? and what's remarkable is how little has changed and what a great thing that is.

Set thousands of years before the original trilogy, KOTOR puts you in control of a republican soldier who is soon swept up in the battle between Sith and Jedi, traversing familiar locales and making ethical decisions that will shape the destiny of your character.

All 30-plus hours of the game are intact, the visuals, while slightly dated, still look good and it all runs perfectly on the iPad. The controls could do with a bit of polish, but it's still a superb game and really shows off the capabilites of Apple's tablet.

African Americans Affirming the Jim Crow analogy in Palestine/Israel

US Campaign to End the Israeli Apartheid | 1 July 2013

African Americans Affirming the Jim Crow analogy in Palestine/Israel

On May 29th, novelist Alice Walker issued an?open letter calling upon Alicia Keys?to cancel her scheduled concert in Israel. The letter has created an immense stir, as those who wish to ignore the situation facing the Palestinians hasten to draw a false wall between the experiences of African Americans under Jim Crow and Palestinians today, attacking Alice Walker's person in the process, in major media outlets including the?Wall Street Journal, the?Daily News?and the?New York Post. In signing this letter, we affirm the accuracy of parallels drawn between the experience of African Americans in the U.S. under Jim Crow and Israel?s treatment of Palestinians. The reality of the Palestinian situation is nothing short of horrendous. Israel has refused to comply with United Nations resolutions calling for a?withdrawal?to the Green Line of 1967; no recognition has been given by Israel of the?right?of Palestinian?refugees?to return?to their homeland, in clear?violation of international law?and precedent; Palestinian land has been consistently seized by the Israeli government since 1948, often under the false pretense of security reasons; Palestinian citizens of Israel face de facto and de jure discrimination, including?several dozen laws?discriminating against them, andinferior education?resources; a so-called separation wall has--again?in violation of international law--been established through and around Palestinian lands.? The list of the discriminatory treatment Palestinians face, which fits the definition under international law of ?the crime of apartheid,? seems endless. UN Special Rapporteur and South African John Dugard made comparisons between Israel?s treatment of Palestinians and apartheid in a?2007 report, as?hasfamed South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who traveled the world advocating for a boycott of South Africa under apartheid. More recently the former South African ambassador to Israel?sent a lettercondemning Israel for its ?replication of apartheid.? A?2012 report?by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, while also drawing attention to conventions on apartheid, framed Israel?s treatment of both its Palestinian citizens, and those living under military rule in the occupied territories, in terms of segregation and racial discrimination. We stand against bigotry and racism in all their forms, and wish to express that the treatment Palestinians face shares much in common with what African Americans experienced under Jim Crow segregation in the USA. Apartheid is not a system limited to South Africa between 1948-1994. Apartheid was established as a?universal crime by the international community?in?1973?and again in?2002. but it is a system whose origins can be found in Jim Crow segregation and in settler colonies established by Europe around the world.

We stand by?

Alice Walker?s analogy?between Israel's treatment of Palestinians and the Jim Crow segregation in the United States that many of us experienced, and struggled against through the civil rights movement. It is therefore no surprise to us, that, in response to Israel?s systematic discrimination, our acclaimed sister Alice Walker has?urged Ms. Keys?to employ the time-honored, peaceful method of boycott and to cancel her upcoming concert in Israel.? How One Korean Actress Conquered Facebook With Cosplay

Yuri Seo is a voice actress for League of Legends. She?s also a cast member of Saturday Night Live Korea. And recently she conquered Facebook.

When the fourth season of SNL Korea was getting underway, all the cast members were told to promote SNL Korea on Facebook ? well, except her.

Seo wrote on Facebook (via tipster Sang) that her feelings weren?t hurt, because she didn?t have that many Facebook followers and wasn?t that well known on SNL Korea. She had just started the previous season and was never really given anything to do. So, perhaps, SNL Korea thought few people visit her Facebook page, so why bother?

However, Seo decided to do a Facebook stunt of her own. She told her Facebook followers that if she got more than 10,000 Facebook likes, she would cosplay as Janna from League of Legends, one of the characters she voices in the Korean version.

Well, not only did she get 10 thousand Facebook likes, she got way more. Currently, her Facebook page has over 80,000 likes!

And now she?s appearing in a Hyundai ad with other SNL Korea cast members.

All of this apparently makes Yuri Seo the first voice talent to crossover to the Korean mainstream. Voice actors and actress have never been mainstream celebrities in South Korea. Until now.

200-year-old rockfish caught off Alaska coast

200-year-old rockfish:?A Seattle resident caught a shortraker rockfish, which at some two centuries old?might be the oldest one ever caught.

By Elizabeth Barber,?Contributor / July 3, 2013

Sport fisherman Henry Liebman, from Seattle, holds his record-breaking shortraker rockfish at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game office on Friday in Sitka, Alaska. The fish measured more than 40 inches and weighed almost 40 pounds.

Long before Alaska was a state, a fish was born there. And for 200 years that fish lived off Alaska?s coast, oblivious to the centuries of national and personal dramas that played out nearby. Until now.

A Seattle resident has caught a 39-pound, 41-inch-long shortracker rockfish that is estimated to be some two centuries old. If the age is correct, then it will be the oldest shortracker ever caught, as well as one of the oldest fish ever caught, the?Daily Sitka Sentinel reported.?The fisherman, Henry Liebman, has now passed the fish to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for?age verification, the Sentinel said.

The Rockfish ? which looks like a goldfish that has magically enlarged and burst from its bowl ? are common off Alaska, as well as near the coasts of eastern Russia and northern California. The shimmering, neon orange, and somewhat bloated looking?fish is generally found either alone or in small groups at a depth of between about 990 ft. to 1,650 ft., with old fish deeper than their younger counterparts, preying on small crustaceans that live on underwater boulder fields.?

The Shortraker rockfish are thought to average in lifespan about 120 years and to be the second-longest-living of all the varieties of rockfish, with the Rougheye species topping the lifespan list at some 140 years.?That means rockfish are some of the world?s oldest living fish, matched only by equally long-lived fish like the sturgeon, an ancient fish found in North America that can live to be more than a century old.

?Rockfish are way out at one extreme in terms of lifespan,? said?James Haynes, a professor of?Environmental Science & Biology at SUNY?Brockport.?Of the worlds some 25,000 identified species of fish, most are concentrated closer to the other lifespan extreme, completing their lifecycle in about a year, he said.?

But even by rockfish standards, this latest catch is unusually old.

?This is an extraordinarily old individual," said Haynes "The vast majority of rockfish won't live to 200 ? this fish had a certain genetic endowment, and it didn?t get sick and it didn?t get eaten.? ?

The fish?s size likely also played into its old age, since size is often correlated to age in fish, said Dr.?Haynes. The previous record age for a caught rockfish was about 175-years-old, and that fish, at about 32.5-inches-long, was smaller than this latest catch.

Fish age is usually determined using the animal?s otoliths ? its earbones ? as those bones contain a record of seasonal growth patterns, much as do tree rings. Since in temperate zones fish grow more in the summer than they do in winter, patterns in the otoliths suggest how many full years that fish has weathered, with alternating wide summer zones and narrow winter zones.

Those patterns are less discernable in polar zones, and even less so in tropical zones, where there is less seasonal variation in temperature, said Dr. Haynes. A fish caught in Alaska, at the boundary between the temperate and polar zones, likely experiences enough temperature change that its otoliths can be read for its age, he said.

Editorial: High Fidelity Pure Audio starting a noble but losing battle

Editorial High Fidelity Pure Audio starting a noble but losing battle

The announcement is wrapped in an aura of déjà vu: Universal Music Group is marketing an uncompressed, high-end digital audio format for Blu-ray called High Fidelity Pure Audio (HFPA). Where standard CD audio is 44.1KHz at 16 bits, HFPA's A2D sampling rate clocks in at a sky-high 96KHz at 24 bits.

Analog elitists will maintain that even extremely refined sampling is inherently inferior to capturing unchopped waveforms, and while that argument is fun to test, it is academic in the context of wide consumer adoption. Can a new audiophile format gain traction in a technomusical world governed by convenience and mobility?

Glympse teams with Evernote to keep track of your location 'trails'

Android Central

Glympse trails will now be available from your Evernote account

Glympse, the pioneers of user-to-user real time location sharing, has announced that they're teaming up with Evernote to allow users to archive a list of their Glympse trails. Using the built in sharing features in Android, Glympse location data can now be automatically shared to a special "My Glympse Trails" folder in their Evernote portfolio.

Many of our users have requested a way to save a snapshot of their Glympse map trails so they can view road trips, keep runs and bike rides, archive a special trip abroad, or just remember an interesting location. We wanted to make this feature simple and easy. Evernote is the perfect solution: users retain complete control over how they share their location and can choose to save their trips to their personal Evernote account for review at a later date.

Each saved Glympse entry will contain details about the recipients, date, time, and duration of the Glympse as well as the destination if included. Of course, all this is stored in the user's Evernote account for easy access from just about anywhere.

The changes are available in today's update, which you can download from the Google Play link above. Jump past the break for the full press release.

Google Play highlights great apps with the 'Beautiful Design Collection'

Press

A set of apps that show off the highest quality of design and function on Android today

Every so often Google Play will put up "collections" of apps that fall into a certain genre or fit with a current season or holiday. This time the Android Design Team is taking time to highlight 11 apps that have taken design to the next level with the "Beautiful Design Summer 2013 Collection". In a blog post detailing the criteria for the collection, the team explains what makes an app "beautiful":

"Transitions are fast and clear, layout and typography are crisp and meaningful, and design touches that delight you in surprising ways are sprinkled throughout."

They have made up a list of 11 apps that exemplify these ideals -- Pattrn, Pocket, Timer, Eye in Sky Weather, NY Times, Grand St., Pinterest, Press, Expedia, Flipboard and TED -- of what great Android design looks like. And that doesn't mean that every one of these apps follows Android's Design Guidelines pixel-for-pixel, either. They're called guidelines and not requirements for a reason, because Google thinks that it is possible to make an app feel coherent to the Android aesthetic while still keeping its own personality.

The team encourages all Android developers to take a look at these apps to get a feel for the design details necessary to "separate good apps from great ones." For users, you may want to grab a download of some of these as great examples of what is possible with Android apps today.

Stunning Video Is Animated With Nothing but Light and Freezing Breath

Considering that basic projectors are fairly dated pieces of tech at this point, the number of people still putting them to ingenius, wildly creative use is almost baffling. And this recently released video from the band Travis is no exception. With nothing but their trusty projector and some likely hyperventilating, they were able to turn their own breath into the beautifully ethereal animations you see above.
