University of Virginia Students Fight For More Tolerant Song

Students from the University of Virginia are calling for an end to the student-led tradition of inserting the word "not" before the word "gay" in its traditional fight song.?

The student council unanimously passed a resolution, urging the campus community to stop singing "not gay" during the "Good Ol' Song," five years after the Queer and Allied Activism group first raised the issue. The group's explanation, according to the Cavalier Daily student newspaper, was that the insertion started to become audible during televised football games.?

?

Allen Groves, dean of students, called the chant "juvenile" and embarrassing, and Eric McDaniel, the student-sponsor of the bill said the chant was "a relic of hate from a time of intolerance that we have more than progressed past."?

?

Outsports reports that students have made the addition to the song since the 1970s.

?

The Cavalier Daily's editorial staff also urged students to drop the addition to the "Good Ol' Song."?

?

"Certainly there is a right to be ignorant; to have one?s views and shout them too," they wrote. "But the addition of ?not gay? does not even express this. It says only that Virginia isn?t gay ? which isn?t true, given demographics and the fact that a Charlottesville Pride Festival happened Saturday. 'Not gay' is also not funny or clever or in any way cool."

Ask Engadget: should companies include a cable with a new product?

Ask Engadget

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from is from David, who wants to know if you'd prefer a free cable or a cheaper device when you buy pro audio gear. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I work for a small audio-tech company and we're currently getting close to releasing out first retail product, which does surround sound from stereo inputs -- kinda like Dolby Pro Logic, except good. Internally, we're agonizing over if we should include a stereo RCA cable. Of course, users will need to integrate an additional cable into their set up, but plenty of people will have spares lying around at home. Do you think it's better to:

a) Include a cheap cable and let people who care buy a high quality one?
b) Include a reasonable quality cable but increase the price?
c) Include no cable and make it clear they need to buy one?

Many thanks!"

What a question! We're decidedly of two minds, since given a bit of haggling, most retailers will chuck in a branded lead, but we'd hate to get our shiny new gear home to find it's missing a key component the one time they don't. Our dithering aside, it's time to turn the question over to our faithful Engadgeteers with this chance to shape the future of the high-end audio business for the better, we'd better not disappoint the man!

NHL, locked-out players resume bargaining

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NHL and the players' association seemingly had a good day on Friday as they returned to the negotiating table.

It just wasn't good enough to bring the sides all that much closer to the end of the lockout that threatens the start of the hockey regular season.

The league and the union got back to bargaining for the first time since players were locked out on Sept. 16, and the sides discussed secondary issues without broaching the big economic divide that really is the essence of the dispute.

"It was a good day," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said Friday night after the second negotiating session of the day. "I wish we had spent today on what we consider to be the more meaningful issues, but it is what it is."

The sides were together for a total of about five hours ? including a private meeting between Commissioner Gary Bettman and union head Donald Fehr.

A handful of players also took part in the talks.

The groups agreed on issues related to player safety and drug testing, areas that weren't expected to be contentious. They will get back together on Saturday morning, and plan to meet on Sunday, too, but the topics of discussion still don't seem to include the big dollar issues.

"I don't know if I would say significant, but we did seem to make some progress on a number of things. Hopefully we will continue," NHL Players' Association special counsel Steve Fehr said. "There is no plan right now to discuss core economic issues."

And that is where the frustration lies. The NHL is waiting for the players' association to make a counterproposal to one the league made to the union in the previous bargaining session more than two weeks ago.

"We can't make them talk about what they don't want to talk about," Daly said. "In fairness, we do have to cover these issues if we're going to reach an agreement. What we're doing today is important, it's just not the most important things we can be doing.

"We've made at least two consecutive moves in significant dollars in their direction, and they haven't moved a single dollar in our direction since Aug. 4."

Former player Mathieu Schneider, now an NHLPA special assistant to the executive director, said Friday morning that there were agreements on more rigorous drug testing, expanding it to parts of the year during which testing is not currently done.

Neither side sees the use of performance-enhancing drugs as a problem in the NHL.

"We're in agreement that it's not an issue in our sport," Schneider said. "I think it's in the players' best interest as well as the sport to close off any possible time during the year where players could use."

Other topics on tap for Friday and through the weekend are various health and safety issues, time players spend at training facilities, and other non-economic topics.

"We like to say that nothing is agreed to until everything is agreed to, but we've certainly made some headway," Schneider said. "A lot of it was done previous to this morning. We're taking notes of where we stand. I would say that we have a lot of mutual ground that we have found agreement on."

It is not impossible that monetary issues will come up for discussion in this round of talks, they just aren't scheduled. Neither side has indicated it is prepared to make a new offer now regarding how to split up the more than $3 billion annual pot of hockey-related revenue.

"In general, when you're dealing with collective bargaining, when you start to have agreements on smaller issues, it can lead to bigger issues," Schneider said, "but it's still too early to say."

These are the first talks since the lockout was put in place on Sept. 16 and they came a day after the league canceled the remaining preseason games. The regular season is to start Oct. 11.

If a deal isn't reached soon, regular-season games will be in danger of being lost. The NHL canceled the entire 2004-05 season because of a lockout that eventually led to the collective bargaining agreement that expired this month.

"The calendar continues to tick along," Daly said. "My guess is as time goes on, regular-season games are at risk. I don't think it can be any more urgent than where we are now. We've had that level of urgency for a long time. In some respects you can meet all you want, but if there is no compromise or no movement or no new proposals I am not sure at the end of the day what you're meeting over.

"There is a very high degree of urgency certainly on our side. I can't speak for their side, but I am sure they would tell you there is a degree of urgency there, too."

Steve Fehr contended that the players' association is willing to discuss any issues at any time to try to make a deal soon.

"We can discuss the core issues whenever they want to do it," he said. "Bargaining is not ping pong. There are no rules on who has to serve.

"I don't want to use the adjective optimistic, but it was a productive discussion. We had a good session and hopefully it will continue and build momentum."

The Las Vegas Badger: Good For Hobby Lobby

From the Deseret News:
Craft store chain Hobby Lobby filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the Obama administration's requirement that most health insurance plans cover contraceptives for women, citing the owner's religious beliefs and opposition to covering abortion-inducing drugs.

The rule change took effect for businesses on Aug. 1, and requires coverage for sterilization, contraception and some abortion-causing drugs. Hobby Lobby is the largest and only non-Catholic-owned business to file a lawsuit against the mandate thus far, joining 26 other separate lawsuits. A variety of religious groups have pushed back against the rule, saying it is a violation of their fundamental right to religious freedom.

Critics of the mandate have pointed out that while there are exemptions for places of worship, the exemptions are so narrow that they would disqualify those who serve people outside of their faith, like Mother Teresa and Jesus Christ. Religiously affiliated organizations such as hospitals, school and charities are not exempted, and non-profits have until Aug. 1, 2013, to comply.

Hobby Lobby CEO and founder David Green credits God's grace and provision with Hobby Lobby's success, and said the company cannot abandon its religious standards in order to comply with the mandate.

"We seek to honor God by operating the company in a manner consistent with Biblical principles," Green said. "The conflict for me is that our family is being forced to choose between following the laws of the country that we love, or maintaining the religious beliefs that have made our business successful and have supported our family and thousands of our employees and their families."? http://www.chron.com/news/article/Pastors-protest-Hobby-Lobby-on-morning-after-pill-3899201.php

I hope Hobby Lobby wins their suit as ObamaCare is clearly unconstitutional when it comes to forcing people to fund insurance benefits that violate their personal beliefs.

I know there is a Hobby Lobby in Henderson, by Best Buy on sunset.? I've been there once, but it is not the kind of hobbies I engage in, but if you like doing arts and crafts, check them out and support them in their fight against the Federal government.

The problem with baby showers vs. man showers | BabyCenter Blog

Baby-bottle beer drinking contests? Destination weekends? Sports events? Diaper kegs? Cigar parties?

Excuse me while I adjust my eyes to the light. I?ve apparently been in a cave and missed the fact that dads-to-be are being treated to a very different kind of ?baby shower.?

Man showers, dad showers, daddy moons, dadchelor parties, dadelor parties? whatever you want to call them, the idea is the same: ?You?re on death row, Dude. And we?re going to miss you.?

I knew there was a reason I always wanted to be a boy.

There?s a certain amount of refreshing honesty that comes with the thought of a bunch of guys essentially wallowing in their arrested development and bidding their friend a drunken adieu at the one-way gates of fatherhood.

If the dad to be gets any present that can?t be smoked or chugged, it might be a formal dad uniform to wear in the delivery room.

Compare that with what goes on with moms-to-be, last I knew, and what you?ve got is a serious discrepancy. Baby showers, in comparison, are yawn-worthy, herbal tea-filled afternoons of sweet little lies and pretension.

Let?s see, whatever the venue, the baby shower message is this:

?Your life is just about to truly begin. Of course, you?ll be needing some equipment. Once you see how rewarding it feels to put these adorable outfits on your baby, then watch him poop all over them, and stick your engorged boobs into his mouth while wearing this tent, or attaching this top-of-the-line pump to your breasts, and carrying our baby around 24/7 in this cool sling while reading her Goodnight Moon in French as you strengthen your pelvic floor muscles with this super kegel exerciser, you will wonder why you even bothered to get out of bed in the morning before you were a mother. Aren?t you excited? Should you really be drinking that champagne and eating that Brie? Here, have some water and celery instead. There?s a good girl.?

There seems to be more than just alcohol that distinguishes these two rituals from each other. Doesn?t there?

Men: Hedonism. Say goodbye to freedom!
Women: Asceticism. Say hello to true, enlightened happiness.

I?m getting a major whiff of sexism here that I never bothered to smell before.

Has your man been treated to a dadchelor party? Would you let him go? Do you ever wish baby showers were more like man showers? Have you ever been to a raucous baby shower?

Hiring plans show retailers are confident about holidays

Gerald Storch, Toys R Us chairman & CEO, discusses his company's plans to hire more than 45,000 seasonal workers this holiday season.

By Roland Jones, NBC News

Toys R Us is joining Wal-Mart and other major retailers making bets that they?ll need extra staff for the holiday shopping season.

The toy retailer -- which hired about 40,000 seasonal workers last year and retained about 15 percent of that number after the holidays ended -- said Tuesday it will take on 45,000 seasonal employees in the U.S. this year to deal with the upcoming holiday season.

Last week, Wal-Mart Stores said it plans to hire roughly 50,000 seasonal workers during the holiday season, slightly higher than the number of employees it hired last year. Other retailers, such as Kohl?s and Target, have also announced plans for holiday-season hiring this year.

A rise in holiday hiring is seen as an indication of the retail sector?s expectations for holiday shopping season sales, which are vital to retailers because they account for around a quarter of annual retail sales in a typical year.

This week, outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas said it expects holiday hiring to be up this season from last year?s levels. The retail industry hired just over 660,000 seasonal jobs last year. This year, Challenger expects retailers could add almost 700,000 workers. But that level of seasonal hiring is still below pre-recession levels.

While 57 percent of retailers plan to hire seasonal workers at the same level as 2011, 36 percent say they will be hiring more workers this year -- up from 10 percent in 2011, according to a survey by Hay Group. The management consultancy polled 14 major U.S. retailers in order to gauge retailers? plans for the 2012 holiday season.

Retailers? holiday sales projections and hiring plans show they are more confident in economy, Hay Group said. Seventy-five percent of retailers expect an increase in holiday sales this year, according the survey.

?Retailers are betting big on the 2012 holiday season,? and they are ?calm and cool, rather than concerned,? heading in, said Craig Rowley, who is head of Hay Group?s Retail Practice. After four years of economic turbulence, retailers have figured out how to operate in an uncertain business environment, he added.

However, with the economy still in the doldrums and unemployment stubbornly high, forecasts for holiday shopping this year are cautiously optimistic.

Retail sales in the fourth quarter of the year, which includes the holiday sales period, are expected to grow at a 4 percent annual rate, down from a 6 percent rate last year, according to a report from retail consultancy Kantar Retail.

The past two holiday shopping periods benefitted from a pickup in job growth in October that largely continued through the end of the year, but that sort of boost to the economy isn?t likely to take place in 2012, noted Frank Badillo, Kantar?s senior economist.

This fall, consumers are likely to feel more worried about the future, which will be fed by uncertainty surrounding the U.S. elections, unsettled U.S. tax and spending policies, and no clear resolution to the ongoing European debt crisis.

One area of strength will be e-commerce, Badillo added. He expects online sales to grow 14 percent in the fourth quarter, down slightly from the 15.8 percent page seen in the final quarter of 2011. That?s still robust growth, even though online sales only represent about 5 percent of all retail sales, he added. By contrast, brick-and-mortar retailers will see sales growth of 2.9 percent in the fourth quarter, down from 4.7 percent in 2011.

One retailer who will benefit the most from this trend will be Amazon.com, according to Badillo, who said Kantar expects the web-based retailer to become the most shopped retailer for the 2012 holiday season, surpassing the current leader Wal-Mart.

?Amazon is on a trajectory in terms of online sales that should see it surpass Wal-Mart this year,? Badillo said.

?Online is still very strong and far and away the strongest retail channel in terms of growth,? he continued. ?It?s driving much of the price pressure for big-box retailers; sales growth has been flattening out here for them, or in some cases going negative.?

Indeed, e-commerce tracking firm eMarketer predicts 2012 will see a fourth consecutive year where online holiday sales (defined as sales in November and December) will grow in the mid-to-high teens, after plummeting 8.2 percent in 2008 during the depths of the Great Recession.

eMarketer also estimates that online holiday sales will account for 24.3 percent of the $224.2 billion in U.S. retail e-commerce sales forecast for all of 2012.

(AP Photo/Michel Euler)

PARIS (AP) ? Europe's carmakers could be forgiven for worrying that the slogan for this year's Paris Auto Show, "The Future, Now", is a threat of more hardship to come rather than a promise of prosperous times.

Across the region, car sales are in their fifth straight year of decline and lots and factories are filling up with unsold cars. According to analysts at PwC's Autofacts industry forecasting arm, car sales in Europe are expected to drop 5 percent to 12.5 million units this year. Meanwhile, executives estimate factories have the capacity to build 20 percent more cars than they are able to sell.

The most recent data from Europe's carmakers' association ACEA show new passenger car registrations dropped a staggering 8.9 percent in August, for the 11th consecutive monthly decline. They're down 7.1 percent over the first eight months of the year and certain to continue the unabated drop that began in 2008 for another year at least.

This year, mass-market automakers Fiat, Peugeot-Citroen PSA, General Motors' Adam Opel, and Renault have all reported losses. Renault and archrival Peugeot Citroen, along with Italy's Fiat and Ford of the U.S., have been losing market share in Europe to German car makers BMW and Daimler, while mighty Volkswagen has managed to be the only major car maker to grow sales this year in a market that fell 6.6 percent in the eight months to end-August.

Eight out of Europe's top 10 car markets will see "dramatic decreases" in sales this year, according to auto industry consultants Alix Partners in a June report titled "Europe in Reverse Gear."

The consultancy estimates that around 40 of Europe's 100 or so car plants were operating under capacity and well below the break-even level.

Fiat and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has warned that unless automakers are allowed to close unproductive factories, one or more automakers will fail in the medium- to long-term. But he argues the issue can't be solved on a national level, and has urged European officials to provide a "concerted road map" for the auto industry to close idled plants.

Earlier this month Marchionne had to bat down rumors he planned to move Fiat away from Italy ? but he said he has had to review investments and slow down new car rollouts to adapt to a contracting European market to avoid squandering capital.

France's Peugeot, Citroen and Renault see the Paris Auto Show ? which has its press preview on Thursday and opens to the public at the weekend ? as a chance to show off their latest models to a hometown audience.

The decline in the country's auto industry has been particularly marked: France produced just 2.2 million cars last year, as compared to 2005's 3.5 million. It employs 800,000 people ? 30 percent fewer people than it did 10 years ago.

One of the manufacturers, PSA Peugeot Citroen, will be hard-pressed to gloss over its financial straits, having recently announced it lost ?819 million in the first half alone, and announced plans to eliminate 8,000 jobs and shut a major factory in France.

"The group is facing a difficult time," PSA Peugeot Citroen's CEO Philippe Varin said when announcing the cuts this summer. "The depth and persistence of the crisis impacting our business in Europe requires the launch of the reorganization of our French production and a reduction in our structural costs."

In response to the gloom in the French auto industry, the government has unveiled a raft of incentives. Taxes are set to be introduced on larger, more polluting cars to pay for rebates that are designed to encourage French consumers to buy electric or hybrid cars ? which French carmakers are strong in.

The country's carmakers will be aiming for the mass market with their launches at the auto show.

Renault will be unveiling the new Clio IV, the latest iteration of Renault's top-selling small car. Renault will be depending on the new model, replacing the last version unveiled seven years ago, to attract many of the average French car shoppers who make up the bulk of the visitors to its stand.

Peugeot, meanwhile, will be showing off a small crossover concept car designed to take on the Clio. Called the 2008, the car is based on its popular 208 small vehicle. The carmaker will also roll out its own concept supercar, dubbed the Onyx.

Other new models among the 100 presentations promised by the auto shows' organizers are the new Jaguar F-type sports car and McLaren's P1 supercar.

But motoring aficionados will have to wait until next Spring to ogle the upcoming new Aston Martin Vanquish, as the British automobile icon will skip the French gathering and save its latest offerings for the Geneva Motor Show.
