The 4 best (and worst) return policies this holiday shopping season

Shoppers beware: Failing to read a store's return policy could leave your friends and relatives stuck with unwanted gifts. Here are the stores with the four best (and four worst) return policies for 2012 holiday shopping.?

If you fail to read a store?s return policy before shopping there, you could get stuck with an item that doesn?t work out. But if you fail to read return policies before gift shopping, it?s a friend or relative who could get stuck with an unwanted item.

Fortunately, just about every store?s return policy can be found online these days, and they?re not hard to read if you know what questions to ask?

How to interpret a return policy

In-store purchases

  1. What?s the time window for return??This is especially important for gifts. For example, if you buy a Christmas gift on Black Friday from a store with a 30-day return window, the recipient won?t be able to return it after Christmas.
  2. Will the refund be in the original form of payment??Some stores issue certain refunds only in the form of store credit ? especially for gift returns.

Online purchases

  1. What?s the time window for return?
  2. If you return an online purchase by mail, will you have to pay for the return shipping? (And will the refund be in the original form of payment?)?Most stores will make you pay to ship a return, which is why the next question is important.
  3. Are online purchases returnable to brick-and-mortar stores? (And will the refund be in the original form of payment?)

The best return policies

The following stores offer a return window of at least 90 days, provide a full refund, and allow online purchases to be returned to stores?

Costco

  • Time window??None for most items (the exceptions ? TVs, projectors, computers, cameras, camcorders, tablets, MP3 players, and cell phones ? must be returned within 90 days).
  • E-purchases returnable to stores??Yes ? and they?ll even refund the shipping.
  • E-purchases returnable by mail??Yes, they?ll email you a UPS label, although you?ll have to take the package to a UPS drop-off spot.
  • Note:?Costco even allows returns of Photo Center purchases that you?re dissatisfied with ? just call 866-459-9284. They?ll also refund your membership fee at any point if you?re dissatisfied.

L.L. Bean

  • Time window??None.
  • E-purchases returnable to stores??Yes.
  • E-purchases returnable by mail??Yes, but you pay the return shipping unless you?re an L.L. Bean Visa cardholder.
  • Note:?L.L. Bean never charges to ship purchases to you either.

Nordstrom

  • Time window??None.
  • E-purchases returnable to stores??Yes, with the packing slip and the?credit card?used for the purchase.
  • E-purchases returnable by mail??Yes, but you pay the return shipping.

Zappos.com

  • Time window??365 days.
  • E-purchases returnable to stores??N/A (Zappos is online only).
  • E-purchases returnable by mail??Yes, if the item is in the condition you received it in and in the original packaging. You?ll receive a prepaid return shipping label.
  • Note:?Zappos never charges to ship a product to you either.

Worst return policies

If a gift recipient wants to return your gift, these stores will only offer them store credit, so make sure the gift recipient is a fan of the store or avoid gift-shopping there?

Babies R Us

  • Time window??90 days for most items (see?policy?for exceptions).
  • E-purchases returnable to stores??Yes, but only for store credit.
  • E-purchases returnable by mail??Yes, with the original packaging and any paperwork, but you pay the return shipping unless the purchase was damaged or defective.
  • Note:?In-store purchases returned to a store are generally refunded in the original form of payment, but gifts are an exception. So even if you bought a gift in a store and it was returned to a store, the recipient will still only receive store credit ? assuming they have a gift receipt.

Kohl?s

  • Time window??None.
  • E-purchases returnable to stores??Yes, with receipt. If you don?t have a receipt ? or if you have a gift receipt ? you can still return the item but only for store credit.
  • E-purchases returnable by mail??Yes, but you pay the return shipping.
  • Note:?If a gift was purchased in a store, it must be returned to a store and can still be returned only for store credit.

Macy?s

  • Time window??180 days for most items (see?policy?for exceptions).
  • E-purchases returnable to stores??Yes, with invoice, for most items (excludes area rugs).
  • E-purchases returnable by mail??Yes, with invoice and return form, for most items (excludes bridesmaid dresses), but you pay the return shipping.
  • Note:?Gifts can be returned only for store credit, and food and gourmet gifts are nonreturnable.

Toys R Us

  • Time window??90 days for most items (see?policy?for exceptions).
  • E-purchases returnable to stores??Yes, but only for store credit.
  • E-purchases returnable by mail??Yes, with original packaging and any paperwork, but you pay the return shipping unless the purchase was damaged or defective.
  • Note:?In-store purchases returned to a store are generally refunded in the original form of payment, but gifts are an exception. So even if you bought a gift in a store and it was returned to a store, the recipient will still only receive store credit ? assuming they have a gift receipt.

Victory May Hinge on Voter Turnout

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo.?In a race that has left both President Obama and Mitt Romney with no margin for error, the result may turn on whether Barbara Burke or Paul Lopez, and thousands of people like them in every swing state, is more successful between now and Nov. 6.

Burke is a homemaker from the Denver suburb of Centennial. On a brilliant fall afternoon last week, Burke was one of more than three dozen volunteers working the phones in a Republican get-out-the-vote center.

The next afternoon, Lopez, a Denver City Council member, joined a Latinos for Obama event that packed every available inch of a Mexican restaurant in the city.

In its final stretch, the presidential race is coming down to only a few states?and a handful of key dynamics. But for each candidate, the common thread is a get-out-the-vote effort of unprecedented extent and sophistication.

While polls show momentary advantages, they all point to the same conclusion: The election is close enough that the result will rest largely with people like Burke and Lopez, the activists each side is mobilizing to increase turnout.

President Bush?s 2004 victory over Democrat John Kerry proved that in a close race, these efforts can prove decisive. Late polls that year showed the two virtually tied. But because of Bush?s massive turnout drive, Republicans unexpectedly equaled Democrats as a share of the vote.

With voters starkly polarized across age, gender, educational, and racial lines, the winner may be the candidate who can most closely match Bush?s achievement?and produce an electorate that leans slightly more in his direction. Read more

Why don't these voters decide? Some like to mull

This photo taken Oct. 25, 2012 shows Kelly Cox, co-owner of Shehan?s Transport Refrigeration stands in one of his trucks, in Delhi, Calif. Who are these people who still can?t make up their minds? (AP) ? Who are these people who still can't make up their minds? They're undecided voters like Kelly Cox, who spends his days repairing the big rigs that haul central California's walnuts, grapes, milk and more across America.

He doesn't put much faith in either Barack Obama or Mitt Romney. But he figures he's got plenty of time ? a little more than a week ? to settle on one of them before Nov. 6. And he definitely does plan to vote.

"I'll do some online research," said Cox, co-owner of a Delhi, Calif., truck repair shop. "I don't have time to watch presidential debates because it's a lot of garbage anyway. They're not asking the questions that the people want to hear."

About 5 percent of Americans with solid plans to vote have yet to pick their presidential candidate, according to a new AP-GfK poll. When you add in those who lean only tentatively toward their choice or won't declare a favorite, about 16 percent of likely voters look ripe for persuasion. That's about the same as a month ago.

In a super-tight race, undecided voters have taken on almost mythic stature. Their questions at the town hall-style debate are parsed. Campaign techies wade through data to find them. The president dialed up 9,000 of them for an Air Force One conference call as he flew to Los Angeles this week.

But the undecided also endure Twitter sniping and late-night TV ribbing. They're derided as uninformed nincompoops who don't merit the power they wield. As David Letterman put it: "You're idiots! Make up your mind!"

Do these wafflers, ruminators and procrastinators deserve coddling ? or scorn? Are they just misunderstood?

A look at who they are and what they're waiting for:

___

THEY'RE NOT BLANK SLATES

Two-thirds of persuadable voters have an established party preference, the AP-GfK poll shows. They're roughly divided between those who call themselves Democrats or lean that way and those who are Republicans or lean to that side.

So why not just plan to vote with their party?

"They are really a little bit torn," said Lynn Vavreck, an associate professor of political science at the University of California, Los Angeles. "They may have some issue positions that are counter to their party, or they're not sure how they stand on some things."

Nancy Hoang, a University of Minnesota freshman studying mathematics, considers herself a fiscal conservative and leans Republican. Yet she vacillated because she agrees with the Democrats' support for gay marriage and opposition to voter ID laws.

"I could have gone either way," said Hoang, 18. Not until after the final debate Monday did she decide: Her first-ever presidential vote will go to Romney.

Most of these undecided voters will come home to their favored party by Election Day, predicts Vavreck, who studies an ongoing survey of registered voters as well as trends from past elections.

___

STILL, A GOOD CHUNK ARE INDEPENDENTS

About 30 percent of persuadable voters say they're political independents. That's three times the presence of independents ? just 8 percent ? among likely voters who have decided who they'll vote for, according to the AP-GfK poll.

In an increasingly polarized America, they stand out. Robert Dohrenburg, a small business owner in McAllen, Texas, voted for Republicans Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, but not for Bush's son, George W. He backed Obama in 2008, then had second thoughts this year.

Dohrenburg, 56, watched all three presidential debates before making up his mind to stick with Obama, in part because Romney "says one thing today and another thing tomorrow."

He wishes Ron Paul had won the Republican nomination.

"I'm a very strong independent," he said. "I choose the best candidate."

___

ARE THEY EVEN PAYING ATTENTION?

Professors have a euphemism: low-information voters. The bulk of registered voters who are still undecided fall into that group, researchers say.

"They're basically not that interested in politics," Vavreck said. "They pay less attention to news in general."

Her image of the typical undecided American, based on her research: "the single mom with a couple of kids who just doesn't have time to be attuned to politics but feels like it's her civic duty to vote, and may or may not show up at the polls."

Yet the still-deciding who are committed to voting don't see themselves as out of touch.

In the AP-GfK poll, 85 percent of the persuadables said they have a "great deal" or "quite a bit" of interest in following the campaign, almost as high as among other likely voters.

Rita Kirk, a communications professor at Southern Methodist University, seeks out these involved-but-undecided voters in swing counties of states with close presidential contests. She gathered the groups that recorded their live reactions on CNN during the debates. They are following the race, she insists.

"They know that they're in a county that's going to make a difference," Kirk said. "They're wanting to make a good choice, and they kind of feel the weight and gravitas of that."

___

SO WHAT DO THEY THINK?

They're of two minds.

Persuadable voters are more likely to trust Romney to do a better job handling the economy and the federal budget deficit, the AP-GfK poll shows. And they're about as comfortable with Romney as they are with Obama on foreign policy.

They are more likely to say Obama has a clear vision for the future, however. They tend to say he understands the problems of people like them better than Romney does. They also give Obama a broad advantage on making the right decision on women's issues.

They're worried about the future.

Only 3 in 10 persuadable voters think the economy will improve in the coming year, compared with 6 in 10 decided voters.

"I'm not sure that either candidate is going to be able to correct the issues," said Cox, 43, who watched California's Central Valley suffer through recession and drought. "I'd like to get the jobs back in the United States. I'd like to quit owing China everything. Put the farmers back to work."

___

WHAT'S TAKING THEM SO LONG?

Some see virtue in refusing to rush.

Victoria Cook, a 27-year-old psychology student at Arapahoe Community College near Denver, leans toward Obama. But she stood in line to see Romney and Ryan at a rally with rocker Kid Rock this week.

"I don't want it to get to the point where you just write off the other guys right away," Cook said as she waited. "So I'll listen to what they have to say."

Professor Kirk said many undecided voters are so annoyed by months of TV commercials and punditry and news coverage that they just tune it all out until Election Day nears.

"They want to pay attention at the time they're ready to make a choice," she said. "It's like someone buying a car. That's when they start looking at the consumer magazines and all the attributes and how many airbags do the different models have. Not months in advance."

___

WILL THEY DECIDE THIS ELECTION?

It's possible.

"That small group of people can make a difference if the vast majority of them swing in one direction," said Rutgers University political science Professor Richard Lau, who studies how voters decide.

But that would be unusual. Late deciders tend to be divided, not vote as a block ? unless they are swept up in a bigger wave, Lau said. In 1980, for example, October polls showed President Jimmy Carter in a tight race with Ronald Reagan.

"It was very close up until the last few days and somehow everybody just decided, 'Enough. We're going to change courses here,'" Lau said. "Usually what happens is that the independent voters change in the direction that somehow the nature of the times is already going."

Still, an advantage among procrastinators could swing the race in a hotly contested state.

In the last two presidential elections, about 1 in 10 voters surveyed as they left polling places said they'd settled on their candidate within the previous week. About 5 percent decided on Election Day.

No word on how many made up their minds while standing in the voting booth.

Brain Dumps, Prioritization And Productivity: A Beginners Guide To ...

I?ve been thinking a lot about my plans for the coming months and the start of the new year.

There?s a lot I want to release next year and it?s all wrapped around a strategy that essentially rests on finally getting myself a proper sales funnel of my own products (if you?re new to the Sales Funnel concept, read my introductory series of articles starting here).

This strategy has a lot of layers to it and each layer contains many tasks that need to get done. There?s everything from product creation, to sales pages, email sequences, product delivery, traffic generation, conversion, content creation, and all the bits and pieces that go together for a typical information product business.

The Sales Funnel

I?ve never properly set up a sales funnel, so I?m excited by the potential and motivated to make it happen. I have a lot of untapped leverage within my existing work, so much of this process will be about releasing ?hidden? profits and distributing my content to new places.

No doubt much of what I have described is on your to-do list as well. There?s a never ending list of tasks like this for an information marketer. The unfortunate side effect is feeling overwhelmed, that you are working hard but not getting anywhere.

To make this process more effective, a big part of my strategy is to sequence the tasks in the right order. For example, there?s no point working on traffic building techniques if you?ve got no way to leverage the traffic you bring in.

To help accomplish these tasks, and more importantly, to reduce my stress, eliminate feelings of overwhelm and give me a clear order of tasks to focus on, I am completing a process of brain dumping and prioritization.

The Brain Dump Technique

To put it simply, a brain dump is taking all the things you are thinking about, worrying about and mulling over that you have to do or that takes your attention, and ?dumping? it into a document.

Don't let this happen to youMy preferred tool for brain dumping used to be good old fashioned pen with a big notebook, but lately I?m more of an Evernote devotee because of the cloud based back-up. There is still something satisfying about using pen and paper though, seeing that big list of scribble that just spewed forth from your brain gives you a sense of clearing space.

Entrepreneurs often struggle to sleep because during the evening you mentally review all the things you have to do. To make matters worse, usually while in bed you?re not in work mode, so you don?t go and start to complete a task. Instead you are trapped in your bed, thinking about what you have to do which leads to more things you have to do. It?s stressful because all you do is open loops, never closing them. Obviously it is not conducive to a good nights rest.

Personally I have no issues falling asleep, I tend to only suffer from this problem when I wake up in the early morning before I get my eight hours of necessary shut-eye. That?s when my nervous system is out of whack from being undercooked, which leads to my head reviewing my previous day and what?s coming up in the new day. If I get carried away, my thoughts turn to a complete life-review, which I have to stop myself from doing if I want to get back to sleep.

The brain dump is a great antidote to the sleepless entrepreneur problem, if you let it be.

The key after doing a brain dump, is that you must allow yourself to rely on whatever tool you just used to clear your head. The notes you have taken are not to be pondered until it?s work time, and then only to pick your next task for that day.

If you brain dump and just continue to think about everything, that?s not a proper clearing process. You need to essentially ?forget? about the issue until it?s the right time to focus on it. That?s why you have to trust your notes ? everything is there when you need it so you don?t have to worry about it.

Prioritization Is Next

David Allen's Getting Things Done Productivity BookIf you have followed the advice offered by the popular book ?Getting Things Done? by David Allen, you will be aware of the idea of always having a device to jot down tasks (a notepad and pen, or your mobile phone for example) and then grouping them into projects and prioritizing.

I like the principles and techniques David teaches, but I have to admit I found his full system too much. The task of collecting and prioritizing became a big task in itself. I found it overkill, I can function with something simpler.

My process of prioritization is somewhat free-flowing to match my lifestyle (and personality I suppose too). I stick to timeframes based on what I need to do to keep the status quo running smoothly (blog posts, emails, existing commitments coming up during the week such as interviews) and do these things early to create time to get the moving forward tasks done during the rest of the week.

To decide what part of a new project to work on during my moving forward time, I take into account two variables -

  1. What makes sense to work on now based on a logical order
  2. What I feel like doing in the moment

When I say ?logical order? this is my own internal strategizing process. I use the 80/20 Rule, the Theory of Constraints and my own experiences to decide what needs to get done first.

It?s not really that tricky when you think about, it makes common sense to do certain things before others.

For example, right now I?m working with two contractors to get info products ready for the new year. Hence at the moment I focus all my new project time on the product delivery aspects such as ?

  • Creating product
  • Setting up product delivery technology
  • Payment processing system
  • Sales pages

It makes sense for me to focus on these aspects now, so when I send traffic to my site and people join my newsletter, I have products they can buy and benefit from.

I could spend my time working on video marketing, or optimize and increase the number of podcasts I do, or write more blog content, or focus on my affiliate program, or any number of things. If however I don?t have my sales and conversion process established, most of those activities will just make me more ?busy?, not significantly more profitable.

At the moment I monetize primarily via advertising and affiliate income. Solid revenue sources for sure, but not in my experience as good as having your own product (in terms of financial return, personal gratification and business building).

What?s more important to me now, which I should have focused on years ago, is setting up a funnel that converts and determine my visitor value (how much on average one person joining my funnel is worth to my business). From there I can go to work increasing traffic.

There?s no point filling a boat with people if it?s full of leaks. Fix the leaks first, then sell tickets.

Mood Swings

One area that people rarely talk about when it comes to task prioritization is mood and energy. This is unfortunate because I believe mood management as a technique for energy efficiency is potentially the most important aspect of productivity.

I?m not going to pester you with the basics of body health. You obviously know it is important to eat small regular healthy meals, to get a good nights rest and exercise. These are core practices to set in place to keep your machine ? your body ? running at optimum levels. The rest of the process is all about managing your energy levels, choosing to do the right task to match where your body is at.

For example I?m typing this at a chocolate and coffee shop in the Brisbane CBD with an entire afternoon of available time (I?m drinking tea by the way). I started writing at 2pm, the first business related work I have done today. I have a solid amount of distraction-free time available, I feel motivated to create and I have food in my belly. That?s an optimal situation for me to put in a good couple of hours of writing, which I have.

If it was late at night and I was tired, but not quite ready for bed tired, I?m not about to start writing an article. I need to be fresh for that. Instead this is a time to do smaller tasks, but still tasks that can help move my new projects forward.

For example, I need to assign tasks and give materials to a tech contractor, so she can get my new products ready for download. Do this I just write some short instructions and attach some files into a to-do in Basecamp. When I wake up the next day, chances are the work will already be done.

Perhaps because I?ve had such a flexible work schedule for so long (I?ve been an internet entrepreneur for nearly 13 years), I?ve always been very responsive to my moods (you might say a little too responsive!). Most people have to force themselves to work while tired, or do tasks they hate as part of a job. If I?m tired, I have a nap. If I?m hungry, I eat now, not on some kind of schedule someone else decided upon. I get to pick the tasks I do, so most of the time I do things I like, for example, write this article you are reading now.

It?s important not to fight your energy and moods, but to leverage them. Work with your energy flows, don?t fight them, assuming you have your basics covered with good body health.

If you have an hour spare to listen to some great training on energy management from Tony Schwartz, in a presentation he did for the staff at Google ?

Brain Dump, Prioritize And Work With Your Energy

Do you want a recipe for a productive day? Well you have one now?

I?ve just given you a very powerful, yet simple in concept, three-step formula:

  1. Brain Dump everything on to paper or a digital tool so you don?t have to waste energy thinking about all of it and get a good night sleep
  2. Prioritize your notes into tasks based on a logical order of performance
  3. Work on the tasks, being mindful to align your body, mood and energy levels with the type of effort required to get the job done.

You can also use these techniques for your entire life, it does not have to be about your business. It can be caring for your family, or planning an exercise program, or completing a university degree. Everything can be removed form your head, sorted into tasks, prioritized by what matters most to you and what you can get done given your current energy levels.

At the very least, try the brain dump technique. Getting things out of your head and forgetting about them is a huge stress reliever. I use it every day on a micro level by brain dumping a short list of two-to-five tasks to do that day, if I can. That?s all I think about when it comes to work for that day, the rest I leave for another day, so I don?t think about. If I do think of something, it gets brain dumped, ready to be put on a daily to-do list in the future.

Enjoy your day!

AP-GfK poll: Romney erases Obama lead among women

WASHINGTON (AP) ? What gender gap?

Less than two weeks out from Election Day, Republican Mitt Romney has erased President Barack Obama's 16-point advantage among women, a new Associated Press-GfK poll shows. And the president, in turn, has largely eliminated Romney's edge among men.

Those churning gender dynamics leave the presidential race still a virtual dead heat, with Romney favored by 47 percent of likely voters and Obama by 45 percent, a result within the poll's margin of sampling error, the survey shows.

After a commanding first debate performance and a generally good month, Romney has gained ground with Americans on a number of important fronts, including their confidence in how he would handle the economy and their impressions of his ability to understand their problems.

At the same time, expectations that Obama will be re-elected have slipped: Half of voters now expect the president to win a second term, down from 55 percent a month earlier.

For all the good news for Republicans, however, what matters most in the election endgame is Romney's standing in the handful of states whose electoral votes still are up for grabs. And polls in a number of those battleground states still appear to favor Obama.

As the election nears, Romney has been playing down social issues and trying to project a more moderate stance on matters such as abortion in an effort to court female voters. The AP-GfK poll, taken Friday through Tuesday, shows Romney pulling even with Obama among women at 47-47 after lagging by 16 points a month earlier.

But now his campaign is grappling with the fallout from a comment by a Romney-endorsed Senate candidate in Indiana, who said that when a woman becomes pregnant during a rape "that's something God intended."

Romney, through aides, quickly distanced himself from the remark by Republican Richard Mourdock. But Obama was happy to keep the issue current, telling a crowd in Florida on Thursday: "As we saw again this week, I don't think any politician in Washington, most of whom are male, should be making health care decisions for women," Obama said. "Women can make those decisions themselves."

A renewed focus on social issues would be an unwelcome development for Romney: Among female likely voters, 55 percent say Obama would make the right decisions on women's issues, compared with 41 percent who think Romney would.

Romney's pitch to women has been focused squarely on the economy, making the case that what women want most is to ensure their families and their country are on a solid financial footing. The poll shows that message appears to be taking root.

A month ago, women favored Obama over Romney on the economy 56 percent to 40 percent. Now, the split has shifted to 49 percent for Romney and 45 percent for Obama.

Similarly, Obama's lead among women as the candidate who better understands the people's problems has narrowed considerably, from a 58-36 Obama advantage last month to a 50-43 Obama edge now.

Monica Jensen, a 55-year-old independent from Mobile, Ala., says she voted for Obama in 2008 but will shift her vote to Romney this time, largely because of the economy.

"I'm ready for a change," she said. "I want to see the economy go in a different direction."

Ginny Lewis, a Democrat and 72-year-old retired district attorney from Princeton, Ky., says she'll vote for Romney because "I'm tired of the Republicans blaming all the debt on Democrats, so let them take over and see what they do."

Not that she's optimistic about how that will turn out, though. "I think things will get worse before they get better," she said.

Lindsey Hornbaker, a 25-year-old graduate student and nanny, hasn't been swayed by Romney's charm offensive.

Hornbaker, interviewed Wednesday in Davenport, Iowa, where she was attending an Obama rally, said Romney can tweak his tone but not what she sees as a record focused far more on top income earners and out of touch with most working families.

"I heard him go out of his way to sound so moderate during the debate," she said. "And I thought: 'Who is this? Where did this come from?' He may sound like he's focused on the middle class. But where's the record?"

Obama, meanwhile, has been working to shore up his support among men, who tend to be more Republican than women. In the 2008 election, men broke 49 percent for Obama to 48 percent for John McCain, even though Obama got 53 percent of the vote overall. The president's job approval ratings among men have tended to fall below his ratings among women throughout his first term.

A month ago, Romney's advantage among men was 13 percentage points. Now, it's down to 5 points, with most of the shift toward Obama coming among unmarried men.

Obama's election chances hinge on turning out voters like Jon Gerton, a disabled construction worker from Jonesboro, Ark. Gerton's a staunch Obama supporter ? but he didn't vote in 2008.

"It takes longer than four years to get things to the point where things are going better," Gerton said. "Four years, it's not very long."

There has been a gender gap in every presidential election since 1980. In 2008, women were 7 percentage points more likely than men to vote for Obama.

Overall, people are significantly more optimistic about the economy and unemployment in the coming year than they have been at any point in AP-GfK polling going back to March 2011, when the poll first started asking those questions. And likely voters are even more optimistic than other adults.

Nearly six in 10 likely voters think the economy will improve in the next year, up from 46 percent last month. And 42 percent think the number of unemployed Americans will drop in the next year, up from 32 percent in September.

Count Chrysta Walker, of Cedar Lake, Ind., among the voters who are sticking with Obama because they think he's got the right solutions for the fragile economy.

"He's got the middle class at heart," says the 58-year-old Walker. On the economy, she says, Obama "did as well as could be expected because he didn't get a lot of cooperation."

David Bierwirth, who owns an autograph sales business in Las Vegas, turned out at a Romney rally in Henderson, Nev., this week to show his support for the GOP nominee. To Bierwirth, his vote for Romney is all about the economy.

"I want people back to work," he says, "because then they will buy my products."

The Associated Press-GfK poll was conducted Oct. 19-23 by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,186 adults nationwide, including 839 likely voters. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points; for likely voters it is 4.2 points.

Knowledge at Your Fingertips: The Britannica and Merriam-Webster ...

Today Microsoft launches its new Windows 8 operating system, and Encyclopaedia Britannica and Merriam-Webster are proud to announce the release of our Windows 8 applications. Available now in the Windows 8 app store, these two products mark the next step in the digital evolution of our iconic brands.

I have been preparing Encyclopaedia Britannica and Merriam-Webster for the Windows 8 launch for some time, leading our development efforts in creating these truly stunning applications. This new medium has provided the ideal platform for us to give our users so much more than our core content.

YouTube Preview Image

Optimized for both touch and traditional mouse and keyboard, the Britannica App features the entire Encyclopaedia Britannica database as well as tens of thousands of high-resolution images. But it is the interactivity of Windows 8 that really allowed us to stretch our imaginations and construct a pristine balance of form and function.

With features like the Britannica Link Map, our goal was to provide an environment for users not just to consume knowledge, but to experience it, enjoy it, and make connections between related topics by gliding freely and easily from one to the next. For example, if you?re reading the article on Albert Einstein, you can click on Link Map and bring up a web of connections to phenomena such as relativity, space-time, the photoelectric effect, and the field of physics itself. Tap any of the other nodes on the map, and you can expand the web even further or read the article on the topic you?ve selected. Link Map is an elegant and simple user-controlled guide to knowledge in all its interconnectivity and a way of learning that today?s technologies make possible.

Similarly, the Merriam-Webster App makes excellent use of the Windows 8 environment to deliver quality information. This is Merriam-Webster?s Collegiate Dictionary, America?s most useful and respected dictionary. In addition to all the definitions, the app includes an integrated thesaurus, example sentences, and a Word of the Day feature?along with over 1,000 illustrations and more than 20,000 entries covering people, places, and foreign terms. It?s a great tool for reference, education, and vocabulary building.

These apps are part of a broader story for both companies, Encyclopaedia Britannica and Merriam-Webster. Both have been around for more than a century?almost two and a half centuries in the case of Britannica. Both have long been admired, trusted, and respected for their high-quality work. Both were born and thrived in the print era, and both have made the transition from print to digital and today stand among a small number of publishers that have done so successfully.

Both Merriam-Webster and Britannica are digital, mobile, and on the cutting edge of knowledge, education, and learning. We?re proud to be part of the Windows 8 launch. The apps we?re releasing today are just two examples of where Britannica and Merriam-Webster are now, and they are fine examples indeed. It?s never been easier or more affordable to use our products. I hope you enjoy both.

Weekly Jobless Claims Drop, Job Market Healing - Careers Articles

jobs report unemployment rate

WASHINGTON -- The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell last week, giving a clearer sign that the labor market is healing after wild fluctuations in claims data at the beginning of the month.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 23,000 to a seasonally adjusted 369,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

The prior week's figure was revised slightly higher to show 4,000 more applications than previously reported.

A Labor Department analyst said all states submitted data for the report and that there was nothing unusual in the raw data. The analyst said the data showed no signs of the factors that had appeared to generate sharp swings in the claims reading over the prior two weeks.

More: Seasonal Hiring: Companies Hiring For The Holidays

The four-week moving average for jobless claims, which smooths out such volatility, rose 1,500 to a 368,000. Economists generally think a reading below 400,000 points to an increase in employment, with hiring likely to outpace layoffs.

The U.S. economy remains hobbled by a persistently high jobless rate. Incomes have stagnated and many families are awash in debts taken on during a housing bubble in the last decade.

Recently, however, the economy has shown a few positive signals, with the unemployment rate falling to 7.8 percent and retail sales picking up. Consumer spirits have also brightened.

Those signs of improvement appear to have done little to bolster President Barack Obama's bid for a second term, and there is only one more reading on U.S. unemployment before voters go to the polls on Nov. 6.

Earlier this month, claims swung sharply lower and then higher, which a Labor Department analyst said was likely due to a change in the seasonal pattern that usually manifests at the beginning of the quarter. That distortion in the seasonal data appears to a have passed, the analyst said on Thursday.

Continuing claims for jobless benefits fell 2,000 in the week ended Oct. 13 to a seasonally adjusted 3.254 million, the Labor Department said.

5 Top Things Baby Boomers Must Do Before Starting a Home Based ...

5 Top Things Baby Boomers Must Do Before Starting a Home Business

Don?t quit your day job just yet.If you are a baby boomer looking to start a home business, there are 5 essentials things you must do first.

Leaving the security of a job with an established 401(k) plan, health insurance or other benefits can create a real tug of war for baby boomers who want to pursue their dreams of owning their own business.

Analyze Your Exit Strategy

At the time of this writing, the youngest of the baby boomers are turning 42 and the oldest are turning 60. No matter where you fall into this group, analyzing and preparing your exit strategy from your job will be crucial to your long-term success as a home business entrepreneur. Do you have adequate savings? If you?re married, will you be able to participate in your spouse?s health insurance?

Create a Financial Plan

How much is your salary now? What are your fixed, variable and frivilous expenses? Creating a solid plan so that you and your family will know exactly what the financial picture will be until your business gets off the ground and starts generating revenue.

Choosing a Business Model and Legal Entity

There are several business models to choose from; home party plans, consulting, and affiliate marketing to name a few. You have to make the decision based on your personality and what you are best-suited for. Choosing a legal entity for your business should be discussed with a tax accountant or your attorney. Options are sole proprietor, LLC or Subchapter S- Corp.

Set Business Benchmarks

You wouldn?t travel across the country without a road map, your business is the same. Setting financial and business-building benchmarks will help you to create a focused plan that will help you to reach your success.

Get a Physical

What does getting a physical have to do with your business? Once you leave your job, most likely your health insurance will change and as unfair as it may be, trying to get new health insurance when in your 40?s, 50?s or 60?s can be difficult. While pursuing your dreams of a home business is something you are probably very passionate about, if you do not have good health to enjoy the rewards of your efforts, then not much else is important.

The baby boomer generation is like no other before it or after it. Technically, we are considered middle-aged, but we are anything but middle-aged in mind, body and spirit. We know there is more meaning to life than a commute to an unrewarding 9-5 job, but there are also important steps we must take first. Planning and preparing for your home business now will lead to less headache?s later on.

India preview quotes: Marussia

Timo Glock: "India, in my opinion, is a fantastic track. As soon as we did our first practice runs at the Buddh International Circuit last year, I enjoyed it straight away. There are so many special sections to the track, especially Turn 3, which is a very extreme corner. You have to completely turn into the steering wheel, followed by a very long straight. I'm excited to see what we will achieve there this year there, however with the long straight the KERS factor will again play an important role. Of course, we will try to get the best out of our package and achieve a two-car finish."

Charles Pic: "Of the circuits I would be racing for this first time this season, this is definitely one of a few that I have been particularly looking forward to. The track is very interesting with some striking features, and it seems to have been widely praised in 2011. I have done a lot of work in the simulator to prepare and I can appreciate the parallels with Spa; it looks very fast and free-flowing. I think the long straight will be a challenge for us because we don't have KERS, but we did a good job of achieving a good balance across the whole lap in Korea, so we will see how well the package works for us this weekend. This is my first trip to India - again, something I am looking forward to. 2012 has been a year of new and exciting experiences and I still have four new circuits to look forward to."

John Booth, Team Principal: "We were all pleasantly surprised by the Buddh International Circuit last season, when we raced there for the very first time. It's a fascinating blend of some of the very best features from circuits across the whole calendar, most notably Spa. The track is quite a technical challenge in terms of setting the car up and, from a driver's perspective Timo had nothing but praise for it last year. Charles of course faces another Friday of acclimatisation, but he is really enjoying the challenge and is pushing himself hard. So we head to New Delhi this week hoping to benefit from the experience gained in 2011 and optimistic that we can keep delivering strong two-car finishes in the remaining races, to reflect our development progress and help us to keep a firm grip on 10th position in the Constructors' Championship."
