Verizon Passed on the Galaxy Note, but Is Interested in LG Intuition

LG Intuition Verizon may have passed on the Samsung Galaxy Note, but that doesn't mean that it is disinterested in tabletphones. According to an LG press release, consumers can expect the LG Optimus Vu sometime this quarter.

Furthermore, according to DroidLife, the device will be receiving a name change to the LG Intuition when announced by?Big Red?in the coming weeks. When available, consumers will supposedly be able to pick up the new tabletphone for $200 on a new 2-year contract, or $550 at full price.

With its large 5-inch display, this will be the first tabletphone?from Verizon?as?it opted not to offer the slightly larger one from?Samsung. After the release of the LG Intuition, HTC is expected to?come out with?the next mega-phone, though it is rumored to sport an impressive 1080p display, which the Intuition does not offer.

More Hardware Details:

The LG Intuition will sport a 5-inch IPS touchscreen with a 1024 x 768 resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio. It will launch running on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), but an upgrade to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) will be offered. According to LG, it will?offer a 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU, with 1GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage capacity.

Drought worsens in Plains, despite cooler temps

(AP) ? The nation's most withering drought in decades only got worse in several key farming states last week, despite cooler temperatures that at least gave those living there a break from this summer's stifling heat, according to a new drought report released Thursday.

In its weekly map, The U.S. Drought Monitor showed that as of Tuesday, just over two-thirds of Iowa, the nation's biggest corn producer, was in extreme or exceptional drought ? the worst two classifications. That's up more than 5 percentage points, to 67.5 percent, from the previous week.

Nearly all of Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Illinois are in extreme or exceptional drought, with Illinois showing the most-dramatic climb in those categories, spiking 17 percentage points in one week, to 96.72 percent, according to the map. In neighboring Indiana, where 5 inches of rain fell in some parts, the area of the state in exceptional or extreme drought fell 9 percentage points, to 37.09 percent.

Conditions cooled in the region, but little or no meaningful rain fell, said Mike Brewer, a National Climatic Data Center scientist who put together the latest weekly U.S. Drought Monitor map released by the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. The lack of rain allowed exceptional and extreme drought conditions to continue to expand in the area from northern Missouri and into Kansas and Nebraska, he said.

Plains farmers have begun harvesting what corn managed to survive this summer, although in some areas growers cut their fields weeks ago, chalking the year up as a loss. Many ranchers have sold livestock because they had no grass for grazing or money to buy feed, which has soared in cost.

In the lower 48 states, there was a slight increase in the overall area experiencing at least some drought, from 61.77 percent on last week's map to 63.2 percent on this week's. There was little change in the overall area experiencing exceptional or extreme drought, which went from 6.26 percent last week to 6.31 percent this week.

Rain is expected in the northern Plains in the next few days, although it may come too late to save the region's withered crops.

The U.S. Agriculture Department twice has slashed its forecast for this year's corn and soybean output because of the drought in the nation's breadbasket. It forecast the nation's biggest harvest ever in the spring, when farmers planted 96.4 million acres of corn ? the most since 1937. But the agency has cut its estimate twice since then and now expects the nation to produce 10.8 billion bushels, the least since 2006.

If that estimate holds, the federal government says it will be enough to meet the world's needs and ensure there are no shortages. But experts say food prices will almost certainly climb as corn is a widely used ingredient in products ranging from cosmetics to cereal, colas and candy bars.

Survey: 17% of high schoolers drink, smoke, use drugs during ...

By?Carl Azuz, CNN

(CNN) - About 17% of American high school students drink, smoke or use drugs during the school day, a new survey by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University says.

It's no surprise to their classmates, either: 86% say they know the 2.8 million who are abusing substances during the day, according to the latest version of the center's annual back-to-school survey. The estimate is based on information gleaned from telephone interviews with about 1,000 kids ages 12 to 17.

The survey found that 44% of high school students know a classmate who sells drugs at school, and 60% say that drugs are available on campus. Marijuana was the most-sold on school grounds, students said, as well as prescription drugs, cocaine and ecstasy.

Here are some factors that can increase substance abuse, according to the survey.

Peer pressure

It's not just chatter in the hallways that gets kids started on booze or cigarettes. Digital peer pressure is a problem, the study says. For example, the survey found that 75% of 12- to 17-year-olds say they?re encouraged to party with marijuana or alcohol when they see images of their peers doing so.

Some 45% have seen online photos of their classmates drinking, doing drugs or passing out - a statistic that?s up 5% since last year?s survey.

Those who haven?t seen these pictures are less likely to try drugs or tobacco, the survey said.

Public schools - and now, private schools

The survey suggests there?s been a big jump in drug use in private schools.

In 2011, 36% of private school students said their school was ?drug-infected.? But in the past year, that figure jumped to 54%.

It was the first time in the history of the survey that a majority of private school students reported drugs on campus.

The overall proportion of high school students, public and private, who reported drug-infected campuses was 60%.

Parental involvement and faith

Teens who say their parents are more laid back about drug or tobacco use are significantly more likely to smoke or drink, according to the survey.

Teens who say they?ve been left alone overnight ? almost 30% of those surveyed ? are about twice as likely to have used alcohol or marijuana and almost three times more likely to have tried tobacco than teens who?ve never been left alone at night.

Faith plays a role here, too. Teens who regularly attend religious services aren?t as likely to use illegal substances or tobacco.

The takeaway is ?for parents to talk to their children and get engaged in their children?s lives? It takes a teen to know what?s going on in the teen world, but it takes parents to help their children navigate that world," said Emily Feinstein, CASAColumbia?s senior policy analyst and the project director of the survey.

Do you think kids at your school regularly use drugs or alcohol during the school day or during nights and weekends? How could schools or families try to stop it? Share your comments and ideas below.

Outsourcing Tactics Around The UK | Contacts Manufacturer ...

Ourcourcing has become incredibly common in helping people get work done. No matter what kind of business you are trying to run online, you can outsource all sorts of things for low prices. There are a lot of professionals waiting for you to hire them, but that can also make things complicated. Here?s the thing: there are millions of professionals out there who are all competing for the very best projects. This makes your job difficult when you want to find outsourcers. Scouring through multiple professionals and finding the right one can get tad difficult if you?re not taking the right steps. Here are some of the things that will help you find success through outsourcing.

Remember that when you outsource, you?re not just spending your money, you?re investing it. You may be wary of outsourcing because you see it as an expense that you can?t afford.

The whole point of outsourcing, though, is to make your business more profitable. When you gain the additional time that outsourcing gives you, it becomes possible to grow your business faster. A large number of essential yet not very profitable tasks can easily dominate your schedule when you don?t outsource. So if you?re treating your online business as a real business, then every penny that you put into outsourcing tasks related to it should be considered as an investment.

It?s much harder to come to terms on crucial matters in the middle of a job than it is to agree ahead of time. You have to be sure that they understand your project inside out. Starting a job all over from scratch once it?s half done is something nobody wants to do. The right kind of communication in the initial stages can prevent misunderstandings later on. Don?t just assume that your freelancer will have the same ideas as you about what the job entails. You?ll find that the clearer you are from the beginning, the faster and more accurately the task will be completed. Outsourcing will proceed a lot more smoothly for you when you keep this rule in mind. Try Sunwest IRA videos ? what?s needed for great advice.

You always want to enter an outsourcing arrangement with your eyes open, so do your research first. You don?t want your outsourcing experience to be a gamble. The results you get with outsourcing will depend to a great extent on how diligent you are in this regard.

If you?re hiring someone from a freelance site, look over the feedback he or she has accumulated. If you?re hiring a web designer, check out the websites he?s previously created. If you?re hiring a content writer, then see if he can provide you good samples. The more time you take to research candidates, the more likely it is that you?ll end up with the ideal person for the job.

Outsourcing is a strategy that has many advantages. While it?s always possible to hire someone to work for you directly, it?s often more sensible to outsource. The real benefit of creating an effective outsourcing plan is that you get a lot of stuff done for a cheap price. Of course, what type of result you get is also related to the price you pay. That?s why you should allocate as much as possible for your outsourcing budget. You?ll find that as outsourcing helps your business grow, you?ll come to rely on it more and more.
